Tour ends in Torquay

There have been changes at Torquay since with manager Paul Buckle having left for Bristol Rovers, and getting one over on Burnley last Tuesday. His replacement is Martin Ling, the former Leyton Orient and Cambridge boss.

They've had a decent week too. Having previously beaten Tiverton they beat Bristol City 2-0 on Monday with goals from trialist Taiwo Atieno and Rene Howe.

Atieno was released by Stevenage at the end of last season and has impressed this week and could be a permanent Gulls player by the time the game kicks off this afternoon. Howe is one of Ling's summer signings from Peterborough although he played rarely for them and got most of his football in a series of loan deals.

Howe was on target again on Wednesday, scoring the first in a 3-0 win against Exeter in a Devon derby. Billy Kee and Ian Morris, recently signed from Scunthorpe, got the other goals.

Burnley's pre-season got something of a jolt at Bristol Rovers on Tuesday and manager Eddie Howe is looking to get things back on track today.

He said: "I think we are still a work in progress and we still have things to improve on, but bar one poor performance against Bristol on Tuesday I think pre-season has gone really well.

"The closer you get to the season the more you hone down your side and work on what's needed, but that's not to say the team that plays against Sunderland next weekend will be the team that plays against Watford.

"People still have time to impress and get into the team and we definitely want to see an improved performance at Torquay, especially when we have the ball and being more careful in possession.

"There are always areas to improve and we will. Ahead of Bristol the lads had done a double session and after the journey down they weren't in tip-top shape. We are not going to make excuses though and we are going to do similar things ahead of Torquay.

"We'll work them hard and then go into the game because it's a combination of getting a performance and putting more game time into the players' legs."

Burnley appear at Plainmoor for the first time in over 20 years. That was in the 1990/91 season Fourth Division Play Offs. We suffered a 2-0 defeat in the first leg there and that was enough to take Torquay through to the first ever Wembley final and a victory against Blackpool.

Our last goal on the ground was scored by Neil Grewcock in September 1989, and it was good enough to give us a 1-0 win.
