Part Two starts with Hull

Last updated : 30 December 2011 By Tony Scholes

One thing Burnley will very much be looking to do this season is to get more points in the second half of the season than we have in the first half and that's something we haven't done in any of the seasons since we won promotion in 2000.

Dean Marney is ready to play against his former club

We'll need to if we are to get into the top six but right now we have to be very happy with our placing of 9th, particularly given that a bottom three place beckoned as we looked to be falling to a defeat at Hull five weeks ago.

It's not often you reach the half way stage having played every single club in the division but that's the case this season and Hull, therefore, will be the first team we've played twice.

They will be looking to reverse a trend that has seen us win each of our last five meetings. We beat them twice in the Premier League; we repeated that last season and we've now added this season's win.

That win was a special day for David Edgar who scored his first Burnley goals, netting twice in quick succession to draw us level. Looking back this week, he said: "We were pretty much down and out in that game and the league position didn't look very good for us if the score stayed liked that.

"That maybe spurred us on into the run we've had with the minor blip against Portsmouth at home. We've had a good run of five wins from six games against some good teams, so we just have to keep the run going and keep the confidence high.

"When things weren't going our way we were still upbeat and positive and we still believed we could turn it around. That's what we've gone and done and we just need to keep the winning run going."

The run Edgar refers to is now five wins in six games, equalling the run we had back in February and March this year when we won five and drew one in a run that ended at Hull.

It's difficult to determine what the team might be. Eddie Howe has suggested he'll rotate things but I suspect that might be more likely to happen on Monday with us having two games in a three day spell.

Dean Marney played on Monday and had an outstanding game in midfield. He'll be very much hoping to retain his place which would give him the opportunity to play against his old club. Marney played for Hull for four years from the summer of 2006 and played almost 140 games for them.

One cause for concern is Michael Duff. There has been such an improvement defensively since he returned from injury but he's doubtful having come off with a tight hamstring after an hour in Monday's win over Doncaster.

It's not looking good for Duff, although as yet he's not been ruled out, and if he does miss out then it will probably bring about a reshuffle with Ben Mee moving inside and Brian Easton coming in at left back, as was the case on Monday.

We could, otherwise, remain unchanged and if so will line up: Lee Grant, Kieran Trippier, David Edgar, Ben Mee, Brian Easton, Ross Wallace, Dean Marney, Chris McCann, Junior Stanislas, Martin Paterson, Jay Rodriguez. Subs from: Jon Stewart, Andre Amougou, Marvin Bartley, Keith Treacy, Sam Vokes, Charlie Austin..

Our Opponents - Hull City

Hull are having a good season. Despite losing manager Nigel Pearson to Leicester in November they are currently in fifth place in the table and we should be aware they have a good away record.

West Ham and Middlesbrough, currently in 2nd and 3rd places, have won seven away games but we are the only other Championship club to have won more than Hull's five.

Their five wins have come at Ipswich Town, Peterborough, Nottingham Forest, Derby and Coventry. Four of those away wins have been 1-0 victories whilst the Derby win was 2-0. A 0-0 draw at Brighton means it is five clean sheets on the road.

They have, overall, a good defensive record. It's only bettered by West Ham, Reading and Crystal Palace but the reverse of this is their 26 goals scored is the third worst in the top half of the table.

They played well at Middlesbrough on Monday but fell to a 1-0 defeat. Hull dominated the first half and created a number of chances, but eventually fell to a stunning late strike from Barry Robson.

Right back Liam Rosenior was yellow carded in that game and that was his fifth of the season meaning he's ruled out tomorrow serving a one match ban. With the BBC not bothering with their Football League Show it will also mean a day off for dad Leroy giving us all a Rosenior free day.

Rosenior has been an ever present this season and his likely replacement is Paul McShane who hasn't kicked a ball in anger yet for Hull this season. McShane might have some concerns. He's been sent off previously at Turf Moor and in his last start, at Middlesbrough for Barnsley last season, he was sent off by tomorrow's referee Chris Sarginson.

Hull have Seyi George Olofinjana back in training. He spent the whole of last season on loan at Cardiff and has been injured all season. It's thought tomorrow's game could be just too early for him.

They could line up: Peter Gulacsi, Paul McShane, James Chester, Jack Hobbs, Andy Dawson, Paul McKenna, Corry Evans, Robert Koren, Cameron Stewart, Aaron McLean, Matty Fryatt. Subs from: Adriano Basso, Joe Dudgeon, Robbie Brady, Richard Garcia, Tom Cairney, Dele Adebola.

Last Time They Were Here

Three days before Hull's visit to Burnley last season we'd just dropped our first home points of the season in a 0-0 draw against Bristol City but there was never any danger of dropping more points here as we virtually outplayed the visitors.

Chris Eagles was in outstanding form

Having gone 2-0 up by midway through the first half we never looked back, and what good goals they were. With just under a quarter of an hour gone, Wade Elliott moved forward and then played a delightful ball inside the full back for Tyrone Mears.

Mears got onto it and crossed perfectly for Chris Iwelumo to score his sixth goal for the Clarets. It was a typical Iwelumo header that left goalkeeper Matt Duke with no chance.

Ten minutes later we doubled the lead and with the goal of the night. Again it started with Elliott. He played the ball across the pitch for Jay Rodriguez who laid it off for Danny Fox. The left back played the ball through for Chris Eagles who finished expertly with  crisp shot into the bottom corner.

Eagles was in tremendous form, enjoying what was surely his best spell in his three years at Burnley and he'd played a massive part in the 2-0 half time lead.

Within eight minutes of the restart we'd scored twice more to give us a 4-0 win. The first of them owed much to a shocking mistake by Daniel Ayala who stuck his arm in the air and handled the ball.

There was confusion. Graham Alexander was on the subs bench and we'd won a penalty. No one other than Grezza had taken a league penalty for us since Andy Gray had scored from the spot at Charlton in December 2007.

Up stepped Eagles and he blasted it in to Duke's right. Goalkeeper Duke played his part in number four in our next attack. Mears again was the provider from the right but this time Jay Rodriguez shot straight at the keeper.

He spilled the ball and, as he and a defender tried to clear the danger, Iwelumo stepped up to get his second and Burnley's fourth.

Hull, at this point, decided on damage limitation. They pulled men back and played out the rest of the game successful in conceding any more goals.

The win took Burnley to 5th in the table whilst Hull sat further down the table in 17th place.

The teams were;

Burnley: Brian Jensen, Tyrone Mears, Clarke Carlisle, Andre Bikey, Danny Fox, Jack Cork, Wade Elliott (Ross Wallace), Dean Marney, Chris Eagles, Chris Iwelumo (Steven Thompson 76), Jay Rodriguez (Martin Paterson 70). Subs not used: Lee Grant, Michael Duff, Leon Cort, Graham Alexander.

Hull: Matt Duke, Paul McShane, Daniel Ayala, Anthony Gerrard, Andy Dawson, Will Atkinson, Ian Ashbee (Craig Fagan 52), Robert Koren, Tom Cairney, Nick Barmby (Kevin Kilbane 74), Jay Simpson (Mark Cullen 55). Subs not used: Mark Oxley, Liam Cooper, Jamie Devitt, John Bostock.
