We looked like we could score at any time

For Jewell, like Howe appointed in January this year, it is a sixth successive defeat and he admitted: "I’m not stupid, I know that if you lose six games on the bounce you aren’t going to be flavour of the month.

“I hope Marcus (Evans, the Ipswich owner) still believes in me, but if he thinks it’s best to make a change then that’s entirely up to him. I just want what’s best for Ipswich. As I said when I joined I think it’s a long-term project and I’ll keep going and keep fighting, that’s all you can do.”

He added: “I’m embarrassed walking past all those supporters that have come all that way to see that garbage. I’m proud as punch to be manager of Ipswich Town, but I think some of my players just see it as another game.

“It isn’t just another game, there are people who have done a 500-mile round trip tonight, probably had a day off work to put up with that. It’s unbelievable that a team which not so long ago was looking like a decent team now suddenly looks like a pub team.

“I’m the manager and I carry the can, but some of the things that are happening on the pitch, I just don’t know where they are coming from. We haven’t got any leaders. I’m looking round that dressing room at half-time thinking it’s almost damage limitation. I can see it in their eyes.”

For Burnley, it is now successive wins and Howe can't have had many better birthdays in the game than this one. "That was a very good birthday and a very good night," he said.

"The clean sheet was a really important one for us, especially the manner of it. We didn't give them a sniff and that pleases me more than anything.

"The lads have been working very hard and they know how important it is. I'm really, really pleased for them because the last three games I think we have defended well and not got what we deserved. Today we were comfortable and it could easily have been more than four."

He continued: "What also pleases me is that we have put that type of performance in here in front of our own fans. They have been waiting patiently for that sort of performance and we know we can do better, individually and as a team.

"I thought we were a little bit slow out of traps in the first 15 minutes, but once we got going we looked like we could score at any time. We scored a great second goal just before half time, which was so important and in the second half we were excellent and we controlled things.

"I don't think I've had many second halves here at Turf Moor in my short reign that have been enjoyable as that and I am so pleased for Sam (Vokes). I know what he brings with his mentality and attitude and he has given us a real lift.

"His physical presence means if he doesn't win the first header, the centre back doesn't get a clean header and balls drop in and around him. He and Jay have already hit an instant partnership and I am so pleased, Jay got his strike at the end too because he was a goal threat all night."
