We do need to pick up a few more points away

It was during that first half when Norwich took a two goal lead against the Clarets and their manager Nigel Worthington was pleased with his side although admitted they are not playing at their best.

“I think we are just rolling our sleeves up and working hard at the moment, and that’s what you have to do in this league,” he said. “We scored two really good goals in the first half and we looked comfortable. But we made hard work of it in the second half by not making the right decisions when it comes to knowing how to win games easily. We are big enough and old enough to know better than that.”

On that second half Worthington added, “I could see what was happening because Burnley won’t give up under Steve, they will keep fighting and keep going. You could see the goal coming and it is what happens thereafter, and credit to the lads, although it was frustrating from the point of view of not winning easier than we did.”

He used Darren Huckerby, scorer of the second goal to highlight his point. “Darren is like cheese and chalk,” he said. “He is a great player for us. He can entertain you and excite you and tonight he has scored a great goal.

“Then in the second half some of his decision making wasn’t good, he was running into too many bodies, not making the right decisions as far as passing the ball. He was flicking the ball which I do not like, I am not into that at all. We gave the ball away from it and suddenly Burnley are coming at us.”

Steve Cotterill saw his side come close to earning a point but admitted that Norwich probably deserved the points following their first half showing.

“If I’m being honest I would think they deserved their points,” he said. “We could have got something out of the second half, but we didn’t start the game very well. There was no reason why we didn’t go for it in the first half and people will look at the fact that we took Wayne off at half time, but that had nothing to do with it because we passed the ball well.

“There was nothing wrong with the formation, personnel changed and we started with three at the back because we didn’t want Huckerby to run at us, and that worked fine. But they scored their first goal when we went to sleep from a free kick and the second came from our throw in.”

Looking at the overall performance he added, “We had enough chances to win the game and it could have ended 5-4. In the second half we could have got a draw out of it but then again they could have got a couple more. So being honest I would say they probably deserved the points.

“We caught them at a bad time really. They are on the back of three wins and if we had come here earlier in the season when they weren’t doing so well, and if they hadn’t scored a goal after sixteen minutes, then it might have been a different game.”

Regarding the players who went off Steve added, “John Spicer took a real whack on the shin and we’ll have to see how he is. As for Wayne, I just wanted to introduce him to one of these games somewhere along the line. We are trying to fast track him and we thought tonight was an opportunity to stick him back in. The sooner we get him back playing regularly the better and that 45 minutes will have done him the power of good.”

It’s back home now, where we’ve had some good results of late but Steve is somewhat concerned about the away form. He said, “There’s nothing wrong with our home form and we don’t envisage that changing, but we do need to pick up a few more points away from home at the moment.”
