We are not far away now in terms of fitness

Oldham boss Paul Dickov, who for the second time in two pre-seasons had given the Clarets a tough, physical encounter to deal with, was delighted with the way his team played defensively.

"I can't remember Burnley having a shot on target which is a measure of how well we defended," he said.

He lauded his central defensive partnership of Zander Diamond and Jean-Yves M'voto and said there were positives from the front two of Matt Smith and Reuben Reid. He was satisfied with the work out but admitted that the heavy schedule had left his players heavy legged in the closing stages.

"We played some good football in the first half, but as we tired in the second half we became tired and started hitting the long ball to Matt Smith," he said. "I want to use the big man as an option as he is a threat, but I also want us to play football at the same time."

Burnley boss Eddie Howe was pleased with his players' response to the nature of the game. He said: "It was feisty to say the least and there were tackles flying in, but we want to win and compete in every game and make sure that we're not rolled over, so for us to come here tonight and show that side also pleased me.

"It shows we are hungry as a team, so that was a good positive sign, along with keeping a clean sheet."

Howe left out a number of his players but did include latest signing Kieran Trippier and he was pleased with his contribution. "Kieran defended well and I thought he was good going forward," he said.

"There is more to come and he will get better as he builds partnerships with people, but he showed plenty of positive signs."

How added: "Overall though, fitness is what we are looking at and they look good. I think we look better and stronger as each game goes on. We are not far away now in terms of fitness, but we still have a little bit of time to top them up and do some work.

"I think we need to do that, especially going forward. Our forward player wasn't very well and we weren't very fluid. We didn't keep the ball well at times, so there is work to be done and I'm sure we will improve."
