We are giving ourselves mountains to climb

Jewell saw his side go in at the break with a two goal lead with Jay Rodriguez pulling one back in the second half for the Clarets. "I thought we played really well in the first half," Jewell enthused.

"We looked like we could score every time we went forward and we scored two good goals. The first was from a decent set play and the second was a really well worked goal.

"I wasn't too happy with the second half. We got pushed back a bit and they were knocking in high balls for Chris Iwelumo but I don't remember our 'keeper having too many saves to make."

For Eddie How it was another disappointing as the Clarets failed to take yet another opportunity to close the gap on the top six, and he was far from happy with the way we played in that first half.

He said: "If you are going to lose, you should do it the right way and we did that in the second half. But that's no consolation. We are giving ourselves mountains to climb at the moment.

"We are conceding two goals a game at the moment and at any level, if you do that it's a big ask. We need to give ourselves a chance, but we are having a dip in form at a bad stage of the season.

"I don't think we have become a bad team and I don't think we are too far away from turning the corner in terms of results, but we need to be mentally strong for some tough games coming up.

"There are difficult games coming up, but it's probably just what we need. We are still in and around it, despite our run of form, but we are running out of games and we need to stick together.

"It's a cliché, I know, but at this stage of the season, with so few games to go, we need to try and be positive and look to turn things around very quickly. We need to learn from the defeat and I have learned several things again today."

It was a new look defence for Howe who gave a debut to Everton's Shane Duffy. "I felt Shane did well," he said. "He wants to put his body on the line and he showed a lot of potential. He attacked the ball well in the air and you can tell he is someone who will give absolutely everything to the cause.

"I also thought Wade Elliott made a difference when he came on, so there are positives to take, but we have lost the game and in the end it was probably a fair result because we were very disappointing in the first half.

"I thought we started okay, funnily enough, but Ipswich scored two quick goals and the rest of the half was very difficult. The Burnley fans demand that you put a shift in but we didn't win the tackles in the midfield battle and we looked a little lightweight, hence the early substitution.

"Ross Wallace was on the verge of being sent off, so it was a combination of that and wanting to get Chris Iwelumo on the pitch. We really lacked steel up front but I felt he came on and gave us a different dimension and did very well.

"In the second half I thought we had a go. We were a lot brighter and more aggressive, but ultimately we didn't create enough chances and that's the most disappointing thing."
