Up to the boys to make me pick them

"I was delighted with the work out," he said after seeing a late Robbie Blake goal earn the Clarets a draw. "It was at the end of a long, hard week to be honest. The boys looked a bit tired and jaded, so to get through it was good for them.

"We didn't want to get any injuries, but Chris McCann took a knock to his ankle and we will have to see how that is. He got a knock on the same spot last season." He also confirmed the reason why others were missing, adding: "On Wednesday Joey Gudjonsson got a knock on his knee and Wayne Thomas tweaked his back, but both will be back in training on Monday."

Looking at his squad he's still looking to add more players. "We just need competition in a couple of other areas and maybe if we can add two more, then I'll be delighted with that."

Cotterill gave games to all three new signings and admitted that Robbie Blake will bed in quicker than the other two. Of Gabor Kiraly and Besart Berisha, he added: "Both of them will need time. Besart in particular has had a bit of a stop-start week. He's been missing for a week which hasn't really helped but he came on and I thought he looked sharp for the first twenty minutes.

"It's pre-season and we can't make too many assumptions. We are not looking at picking a team to play in the first game of the season, it is up to the boys to make me pick them."
