Two years ago it didn't affect Burnley's league form

Morecambe assistant boss Mark Lillis, held the same position at Scunthorpe when Brian Laws was manager and is now looking forward to pitting his wits against his former boss.

Speaking about Laws, Lillis said: "He is a very single minded manager and I was delighted for him when he got the Burnley job, but come tonight it will be the battle of the benches for 90 minutes at least.

"It is a great draw for the club and will help continue the feel good factor surrounding the new ground. We have had two cracking games there with big crowds and the atmosphere has been absolutely brilliant."

Brian Laws has confirmed there will be changes in the Burnley side, as others get a chance to stake a claim for a place, and he admits he's looking forward to a competition that was certainly kind to him as a player. He was in the Burnley side that reached the semi-finals in 1982 and he then twice went on to win the competition at Wembley with Nottingham Forest.

"This competition gave me my very first opportunity to play at Wembley so I have great memories of it. That was a very good period in my life.

"The players know this competition can be very fruitful and the rewards are there if we can drag it out as long as we possibly can. Who knows how far you can get?

He's now manager of a club that two seasons ago came within a whisker of reaching the Wembley final and he added: "The most important thing is getting back into the Premier League. That's our objective, but the club brings its own worth.

"Two years ago it didn't affect Burnley's league form. Promotion was on the cards from it and I hope we can marry the two together and do exactly the same - it would be fantastic.

"I do believe there will be a time when a Championship side will actually go and win it. The Premier League clubs seem to have taken a backward step on the League Cup and are dismissing it slightly.

"I think the Football League clubs are looking at this as a golden opportunity to maybe get there. Every season somebody is getting closer and it won't be long before somebody wins it.

"That's how important I think it could be for a club like Burnley, and that's why we will approach it in the right manner."

Laws continued: "Morecambe will fancy their chances at home and they will see us as a scalp. We know it will not be an easy game and if we don't approach it in the right manner we will have a tough game on our hands.

"We have got to make sure we get the mindset of the players right because I want to win this game. Coventry's result is firmly in the back of my mind and I don't want this to be a banana skin so it will a really strong side.

"Our preparation will be as if we are playing a top table team in the Championship."
