Let's go on our travels and go and earn some points

It was all level at half time with the score 1-1 but Sunderland had been the better side. However, their inability to sustain that level of performance was a concern to Bruce. "Considering how good we were in the first half and possibly for the first hour, the last half hour is disappointing," he said.

"We went to such heights and then such depths and we have to put that right. We've had a bad start in terms of giving a goal away, and a soft goal at that, but we looked a decent team in the first half.

"Second half, for whatever reason, we've not been able to put the full 90 minutes together and we'll have to work on that and get better, that's for sure.

"We've had chances and they've had two wonder goals. If we can repeat the first half performance and keep playing like that we'll be okay. But we must stop going from one extreme to the other."

Bruce continued: "They were great goals you have to say and I take my hat off to them. The second was well worked, a great cross and a great goal. That was the difference. The difference between the impact of their substitutes and ours was there for all to see."

Speaking about the Clarets he added: "You don't beat us, Manchester United and Everton if you don't have good players. Their crowd are up for it, the whole town's probably up for it. It's a bit hostile but we should be going away from here with something in the bag.

"Now it's how we bounce back. We've got another game on Tuesday in the cup and we'll go back to work tomorrow morning."

Sign a striker on loan, bring him on as a sub for his home debut and see him score two goals. I think any manager would enthuse and Owen Coyle certainly did that, although also praising the players who had worked tirelessly before David Nugent crossed the white line.

"David will get the headlines, but I think he has benefited from the work done by Steven Fletcher and Martin Paterson," Coyle said after seeing the goal give Burnley all three points.

"I have so much belief in David as a top class player. That's why we brought him to this club and day by day he is looking sharper.

"I told him before the game he was still on the bench because I didn't think he was quite ready for 90 minutes, but I told him he had a big part to play and his two finished were top class.

"Now he has to use that as a stepping stone because he loves it at this football club and I would love to have him permanently."

Coyle admitted his overall delight with the performance in the second half as we took the game to Sunderland and he said: "For me it's a great win. At half time I wasn't happy with our performance.

"I was disappointed by the goal because there was no pressure on the ball and Sunderland took confidence from that. I thought some of their play showed why they are near the top of the league and they bossed it.

"But in the second half we were more like ourselves and restricted them to very few opportunities and scored two fantastic goals.

"I was delighted on a number of levels. We picked the same team again and I thought they were due my loyalty after beating Manchester United and Everton. Some of my players have been criticised in the last couple of weeks and I told them to go and show me what they are made of.

"There is always a clamour from some people to change the team, but those players deserved to go again and they have played their part. What we have to do is all sing from the same hymn sheet and now we have to go and not be known as a home team.

"Let's go on our travels and go and earn some points."
