It was a tough game and an ugly win, but a fantastic one

Hull had, apparently, taken a battering from Nottingham Forest on Saturday but came away form the City Ground with a 1-0 win, and Pearson felt it was a case of roles reversed last night as Burnley defended well to protect their lead.

"It was disappointing not to get something out of the game," he said this morning. "On the balance of the 90 minutes we probably deserved to get something out of it.

"We've maybe had a taste of our own medicine in terms of Saturday's game at Nottingham Forest saw us collect three points with a largely rearguard action, whereas last night we created a lot of chances and weren't able to take them."

The winning goal came after five minutes and Pearson wasn't happy with it and added: "Their goal was a soft one and it was a set play we had talked about. We didn't make them work hard enough to score.

"That's a shame and it's how football goes sometimes but we still had plenty of opportunities to get back into the game. We made their goalkeeper work exceptionally hard, but it wasn't to be for us.

"We tried to force the issue in the second half, but couldn't make the most of our chances. That has been a problem for us at home, but we'll continue to work to put things right.

"It was disappointing and to lose a home game at this stage of the season does make people feel disappointed, but we'll bounce back."

There was no disappointment for Burnley boss Howe who saw his new man notch the only goal of the game in just the fifth minute.

"It was a fantastic introduction for Nathan," he said. "He only joined up with the lads this morning and hadn't even had a training session with us. That's sometimes difficult with set plays, but he took on board information that we gave him and popped up in the right place at the right time.

"That's what goalscorers do and I was delighted with the start he made. I thought he was a nuisance and protected the ball very well for us and showed us what he is all about tonight."

Speaking on the signing of Delfouneso he added: "We needed a striker and as soon as we found out Nathan might be available we made every effort to get him in. We then found there were seven or eight clubs after him as well and you always fear you are going to miss out.

"We talked to Nathan and tried to convince him to come and he agreed, which makes it a fantastic coup for us and the team and I am sure he will do well for us. Now we have really good striking options and it's a real boost for the lads."

Moving on the game and the latest win, Howe said: "It was a tough game and an ugly win, but a fantastic one and I thought because of the effort and desire we deserved it. We scored very early again and sometimes that can be difficult because you end up defending a lead.

"Second half we had to defend for our lives, but we did that and funnily enough I felt we did better in the second half. We broke at times and in the end we will take the 1-0 knowing we can play a whole lot better than that.

"The second clean sheet in a row really pleases me and I thought the lads were well organised. Every team is going to have a spell and you are going to need to ride your luck, but we dug in really well and Lee Grant made some great saves, so I am just delighted with the boys' efforts on a pleasing night."
