Colchester will be riding out of town with their sombreros on

Colchester boss Geraint Williams saw his side win their first ever away points at Championship level but admitted their good fortune. “We were very fortunate if I'm being honest,” he said after his side had won the game 2-1.

“I believe we were very fortunate, but everyone stuck together and worked very hard for each other. You can't play well every game and it was so important to get our first away win of the season.

“Everyone was talking about the first win and we got that at home against Derby. Then they were saying, ‘What about away from home?' and now we've got a win away from home. Even in games we were losing, we've proved we can compete in this league and if we do the little things well we'll be successful.

It's not proving to be a good time at home for the Clarets right now but Steve Cotterill certainly thought we should have won this game, and certainly got something from it. “It is a travesty that we have got nothing out of that game because it was one we dominated,” he said.

“They had three efforts on goal and were in our half about fourteen times, we have been in their half something like sixty times. We just needed that little bit of something in the final third and I really can't believe that result.

“It was a disappointing day, but the one thing is we mustn't dwell on it. We played well and on another day that will get us three points. We had enough possession and I am disappointed not to come away with the win, but somewhere down the line we will catch this one up. There are enough games and we will get three points somewhere when we don't quite deserve it, but as for today, Colchester will be riding out of town with their sombreros on.”

Speaking on the vital penalty decision that led to Colchester going two goals in front he said: “I don't think it was a penalty and the linesman gave a corner but the referee looked at him and looked at him to make a decision and that probably sums up the day.

“I'm a little disappointed the goalkeeper didn't go the right way. I know he has his own mind but in the last game Chris Iwelumo went to the keeper's left, so if I am disappointed with any of the players then it is Brian Jensen's decision on the penalty.

“Other than that we were the better team by miles and we are not far away from being a good team, we just have a couple of things missing. But we have to make sure we stay strong and together now, there is enough strength of character in our dressing room to come through that game.

“I thought we were mentally strong, especially when we got a few moans and groans, something I haven't been used to here. I don't like it and I don't think the players deserved to be booed at stages during the game. It would have been easy for the players to buckle, but none of them hid and to be fair there were quite a few supporters who continued getting behind them.”

He ended by speaking about substitute Gifton Noel-Williams and his performance as a substitute. “I thought he was first class when he came on and I am just desperate for that goal to go in for him. I wouldn't say he's come back with a different or better attitude, but he's just been better and he was first class when he came on and took quite a big weight off Andy Gray.”
