Tw*t of the Week Special – The man in the cap

Last updated : 30 September 2004 By Tony Scholes

Indeed we do and probably as in most weeks there were a few suitable candidates. Perhaps referee Michael Jones, not so much for sending off Michael Duff but for his blunt refusal to even look at the video.

What a shame it is that a referee is so frightened of checking something just in case it highlights a mistake.

There will of course have been others whose behaviour this week could well have given them a chance but none of them will come close to one of the most obnoxious and offensive managers in English football – none other than Stoke boss Tony Pulis.

Under great pressure our manager Steve Cotterill behaved impeccably on Saturday but Pulis ended the day with some outrageous comments to follow ninety minutes of disgraceful behaviour down in the technical area.

His career is not without controversy, there was his much publicised departure from Gillingham and then the quick kick out through the door at Portsmouth yet for some incredible reason he, and his dreadful brand of football, seems to have gone well down at the Windy City.

The technical area at Turf Moor is plenty big enough but not for Pulis and almost from the kick off he was pushing his luck by continually stepping outside which had the fourth official constantly having to speak to him.

He got worse and for some reason didn’t agree with everyone else in the ground as the Clarets went 2-0 up.

If he had been out of order in the first three minutes the free kick from which we scored the first goal really set him off and when the penalty was awarded he went ape.

He was shouting at the assistant, the referee, at the fourth official and at both Robbie Blake and Richard Chaplow – the looks on the faces of the two Burnley players suggested that his comments were far from pleasant.

It wasn’t just that and his arms were flailing, he was throwing his bottle down onto the floor, picking it up and throwing it again, or kicking it.

Throughout the game he received continual warnings from the fourth official and it wasn’t just him. His backroom staff were no better and were up the same tricks as Pulis, berating officials and on one occasion even trying to get Steve Cotterill into some trouble by pointing out that he’d put his foot over the technical area.

And to add to all that he then turned the after match press conference into a complete farce by suggesting that the game had been the most one sided he had ever been involved in. I would suggest to him that his side would probably have not even got a point but for the decision that saw us down to ten men for over half of the game.

The Stoke fans don’t like our manager but there’s one thing for sure, things are a whole lot worse at Stoke with this objectionable man in charge.

The Tw*t of the Week award is now an occasional award for a very worthy candidate – Tony Pulis is that worthy candidate.
