Clarets Mad Tw*t of the Week 2002/03 – Week 8

Last updated : 04 October 2002 By Tony Scholes

It has been difficult to cope there have been so many and there can be no surprise that it has been won by the Burnley fan who delights in insulting his fellow Clarets, Tony Livesey. It follows his article in last week’s Matchday Programme when he criticised Burnley fans for welcoming back Andy Cooke.

Last season the two biggest winners were West Brom’s Jason Roberts and referee Barry Knight but this week all records have been broken as the nominations have soared to new records. Livesey has received more than twice as many nominations as any previous winner of the award.

There has been great debate on the message board with the odd one defending him, suggesting that he was only criticising the applause and chanting after Andy Cooke had been substituted. This was not the case, Livesey was not happy with the welcome he got before the match.

Not only that he even decided it was fair game to suggest that some fans who sit on the Longside are of fairly low intelligence – and that disgusted me.

Apparently Livesey has never been as embarrassed on the Turf. That suggests that he believes applause for a former player is far worse than the missile throwing at Marlon Broomes last season and far worse than the awful abuse individual Burnley players have received. I was embarrassed at Huddersfield on Tuesday when Graham Branch was booed as he came on as a substitute but certainly not when our fans say thank you to a former player who always gave us 100%.

There has been no sign of an apology from Livesey and I am not surprised but I am surprised that six days after the game there has been no apology from Burnley Football Club. It was in their official match programme and as such I would have expected some comment and apology long before now.

There has definitely been real anger in some of the comments we have received this week, it is still hard to believe that Burnley fans have been insulted by one of their own.

Those in second and third places were so far behind this week that they have almost been forgotten but they are both worthy of their positions.

Although he did nothing in particular last week Franchise Chairman Charles Koppel is in second place. This is a very much deserved position for Koppel who is on a one man campaign to destroy English football with the introduction of franchising.

I can tell you that some of the nominations for Koppel did come from AFC Wimbledon fans although to their credit they were overshadowed by Burnley fans who find Koppel’s actions unacceptable.

This web site has had an incredible response from AFC Wimbledon fans following our build up to last week's home game against Franchise delighted at the way we covered the issue. We were more than happy to, Clarets Mad will always stand and be counted against franchising.

Whether Koppel was at Turf Moor or not I don’t know but sadly there were no attempts by Burnley Football Club to not offer hospitality. Banned at Bradford, shunned at a number of other clubs but not at Burnley. And that after Chairman Barry Kilby had spoken out so loudly against what Koppel was doing.

We did get a number of nominations for both Barry Kilby and Stan Ternent, Kilby for not taking the opportunity to condemn Koppel and Ternent for actually offering him a welcome.

Sneaking in to third place was FIFA President Sepp Blatter although sneaking should not be the word. Blatter has again stuck his nose in and has now decided that referees cannot be challenged.

If a player is sent off and video evidence proves the decision to be incorrect, so what, Blatter has now decreed that their can be no appeal and that video evidence cannot be used. Already this season a number of red cards have been rescinded following the use of video but this will be no more as far as Blatter is concerned.

Incredibly the associations around the world allow this man to continue with his ridiculous tinkering and carry out his instructions. Football is struggling just now and Blatter’s transfer windows are not helping, and this decision is nothing more than a backward step.

It really is about time that the FA turned round and said NO to some of Blatter’s crazy ideas, somebody has to make a stand against the man who seems to be untouchable right now.

There were the usual few others to be nominated with a Scottish Lancashire based football manager amongst them but the other one of note went to Adam Crozier and the Football Association for pledging £757 million on a new Wembley Stadium at a time when the English game is scrapping for every penny it can find.

Apparently Mr. Crozier is more concerned about us having enough leg room watching England than he is of the current crisis – a crisis that saw another club Barnsley sadly go into administration yesterday.

What will next week bring? Surely not as big a winner as this week. It can only hope that Livesey feels ashamed although somehow I don’t think he will.

Please send us your NOMINATIONS by midnight next Thursday and the ninth winner of the season will be announced a week from now.
