Clarets Mad Tw*t of the Week 2002/03 – Week 7

Tw*ts of the Week - The Burnley FC Showboaters
The nominations have simply poured in after the Clarets showboated during the last fifteen minutes at Valley Parade after finally taking the lead against Bradford’s nine men.

Some of the nominations were for the players, some for the manager and some for the defence but not one single nomination, and rightly so, was received for Steve Davis. On Monday and Tuesday of this week Stan Ternent tried to hand over the attention for it all to Steve with his ‘I don’t blame Steve Davis’ headline but the fact is nobody did blame him.

The only thing Steve Davis was guilty of was making a mistake, it was the totally unprofessional attitude that people were complaining about. There has been much come out of Turf Moor this week suggesting everything would have been all right had we won 2-1. If that is the case then we have sadly learned nothing from this sorry episode.

The nominations have used words such as ashamed and embarrassed with one telling Clarets Mad that if he were ever to see such a disgraceful piece of showboating again he would turn his back on the club until those responsible were gone.

It is sad to report but the respect of a lot of our supporters was lost last week and we can only hope that we never see the like of this ever again.

Runner Up - Nicky Law
We remain at Valley Parade for second place and without question that is Bradford manager Nicky Law following his outburst after the game. Any manager is upset when he has two players sent off and whatever the circumstances with those two he had every reason to be upset when his assistant was sent off for celebrating the goal Barry Fry style.

That does not though excuse him for his verbal attack on Dimitri Papadopoulos. He can say what he wants about the referee but it is bang out of order when he starts accusing one of our players of gamesmanship in the way he did with his claims that our centre forward dives around all over the place.

He has since apologised but at no time did he retract his comments, he just apologised for having said them. He isn’t the first to suggest it and he won’t be the last and there is no doubt that he does go down easily.

Law will probably have avoided any disciplinary action having apologised but there is no doubt that he was saying exactly what he thought about Papadopoulos.

He does though need to take a long look at some of his players before he goes throwing accusations around and the two footed challenge from Cadamarteri just before half time was as bad as anything I have seen for a while.

We are off to the Champions League to find third place this week and not Alex Ferguson for yet another whinging session or Liverpool for being unable to beat a team managed by Christian Gross. Neither is it Newcastle for yet another poor result.

Thierry Henry scores, the best answer for the racial abuse from the PSV Eindhoven fans
In third place are the supporters of PSV Eindhoven following the racial abuse hurled at some of the Arsenal players, and in particular Thierry Henry, during the game this week. I saw this kind of behaviour myself outside the ground at Bradford last week and it really is sickening.

Let’s say here and now that in all probability the majority of the Dutch fans will have behaved themselves and not been involved in it but the minority involved in these racial attacks have brought shame on their club and that reflects on the entire support.

Thierry Henry should not have to put up with and thankfully there is to be an investigation into the whole sorry episode. It was good to see though that Arsenal quietened them in the best way possible with a 4-0 win.

There were other nominations from last Saturday’s game at Bradford and both sets of supporters received them. There were complaints of intimidation from the home fans and also nominations for some of our supporters who once again engaged themselves in verbal attacks on Bradford people because of their colour. Some of it from supporters’ coaches was particularly disgraceful.

That’s it for this week but don’t forget to send us your NOMINATIONS by midnight next Thursday before we announce next week’s winner in seven days time.
