Clarets Mad Tw*t of the Week 2002/03 – Week 5

Tw*ts of the Week - those involved in the violence at Watford
One incident though has stood out and that was the at Watford on Tuesday evening for their Worthington Cup clash with rivals Luton Town. Yes the two clubs are bitter rivals but what happened went beyond that.

It does appear that it was Luton fans responsible initially as they stormed on to the pitch to take on the opposition before the match had even got underway. There were terrible scenes witnessed by the television cameras and one fan was brandishing one of the corner flags in an assault on the opposition.

This was the first of two days when football was paying its respects to all those who died a year ago in the terrorist attacks in America but this was of no interest to these mindless hooligans and sadly it has to be reported that the planned minute’s silence had to be cancelled.

It can only be hoped that the courts deal very severely indeed with all those involved and they will all receive exclusion orders. Maybe it is time the clubs all got together and issued this lot with life bans from all grounds.

Second place - Sport England's clown David Moffett
There is more on this shortly but second place goes to David Moffett. Who you say? And you might ask. Moffett is the Chief Executive of Sport England and he continues the tradition of complete idiots getting into office in important sporting roles.

Moffett has this week been discussing the financial problems in football, and in particular in the Football League. He has noticed that some of the clubs in difficulties have recently been in the Premiership and has therefore deduced that this is the reason for clubs having such problems.

Needless to say he has solved the problem and his idea to remove all financial hardships is to scrap promotion and relegation. He admits to speaking personally and not in his role with Sport England but then goes on to say that part of his job is to encourage debate on difficult issues.

When it was put to him that this would do the game no good, would make it boring and remove any chance of a dream climb to the top Moffett says,

"People will say that ending promotion and relegation would make football boring and remove the whole point of clubs existing. But the evidence from other sports in other parts of the world suggests that almost the exact opposite is true, that doing away with them can actually enhance the appeal of a competition. There is no relegation in the Super 12s, Australian cricket, Australian rugby league, Aussie Rules football, the NFL and baseball in America or in Europe's own Six Nations, yet no one says that they are boring competitions, do they? They are exciting, vibrant, highly competitive tournaments that huge numbers of fans love. They do not suffer just because nobody gets relegated."

Super 12s, Aussie Rules and baseball – get real Moffett. Is this really the best you can do? I shudder at how some of these people get these positions. This is almost as bad as the Chairman of Granada Charles Allen being allowed to chair the Commonwealth Games committee. Is it any wonder sport is in a mess?

Worryingly people actually listen to clowns like Moffett.

Third place Joe Kinnear - totally irresponsible
For third place we return to those disgraceful scenes at Vicarage Road and the thoughts of one man. As kick off was delayed and people treated on the pitch for injuries you would think those responsible for the game would be extra careful what they have to say on the issue.

Not Luton Town boss Joe Kinnear though. This clown clearly spent too long with Sam Hammam and Hammam’s attitude to hooliganism must have rubbed off on Kinnear.

Of course the press were going to discuss the pre-match problems with the two managers and of course football needed them to be sensible. Not Kinnear though, although let’s face it when did he last say anything worth listening to?

Kinnear took a look at the attendance and then the number of people actually involved in the problems and claimed it was ‘No Big Deal’.

That’s disgraceful Kinnear and almost condoning what happened. Nobody is suggesting that you turn it into World War III but it was your fans who started the whole thing and surely you should have been condemning them.

Besides the top three there were a good number of nominations for the incompetent Andy Hall who refereed our game at Derby last week although he wasn’t able to prevent us storming back in the second half to win the game no matter how hard he tried.

It was also the Derby game that won nominations for two from Sky, commentator Ian Crocker and resident claptrapper Chris Kamara. Both have given the Clarets no credit for that win this week and both have suggested the game wasn’t up to much and seemed to be all because Derby had not played well.

I sometimes think we shouldn’t care when they don’t give us any credit but sometimes I do think these people should be taking a look at both sides.

Now it is your turn again. All we ask is you keep your eyes on the game over the next week and send us your NOMINATIONS for next week. You have until midnight next Thursday.

The winners so far:

Week 1 – Roy Keane (Manchester United)

Week 2 – Jeff Winter (Referee)

Week 3 – Football League’s Football Disciplinary Commission

Week 4 – Alex Ferguson (Manchester United manager)

Week 5 – Luton Town supporters
