Clarets Mad Tw*t of the Week 2002/03 – Week 2

Tw*t of the Week - Jeff Winter
Once again referees are being pilloried as they produce red card after red card and with the Clarets already having as many players sent off this season as we did throughout the whole of last season it is perhaps not surprising that a referee has taken this week’s award.

Needless to say it is the incompetent, overweight and certainly less than mobile Jeff Winter who turned in a horror show at Molineux last week. He got off to a good start by reducing the Clarets to ten men by brandishing the red card at Paul Cook. There is no doubting that Cooky’s challenge was late, reckless and somewhat wild but surely this was a yellow card offence.

There were suggestions that it was for foul and abusive language but that is clearly not the case, Winter sent Cooky off for the foul. He didn’t stop at that though and his next dreadful act was to race over to Wolves substitute Paul Ince to shake his hand when he came on for Colin Cameron, an act that upset a lot of Burnley fans.

And then there were the penalties. As he turned down a blatant penalty when Glen was brought down he was quick to award Wolves a spot kick for a hand ball against Steve Davis when it was obvious to everyone that he couldn’t get out of the way.

Glen Little himself was not happy with these two decisions and said,

"Then he gave a really harsh penalty against Skip. On top of that, just after we had gone 2-0 down, I was clearly fouled in the Wolves box and I thought it was a nailed on spot kick.

"Nothing was given and I am not saying it would have changed the game but 2-1 is a lot better scoreline than 2-0 so who knows. And it was not a great game to be playing with a man short. We faced a good side on a big pitch in weather more suited to the beach and so it was really hard work. In those circumstances I thought we did quite well - despite the ref.

"Mr Winter is one of the top flight referees and, to be honest, the Premiership is welcome to him.

So the players had the same opinion and that certainly ensures that Winter is a worthy winner.

Runner-up Gary Hart
It is back to an incident in the Brighton game for second place this week and primarily the incident that saw Arthur Gnohere sent off.

Did he touch him or not? The answer appears to be yes with those closest to the incident in the lower tier of the Harry Potts Longside confirming it. There have also been suggestions that the police cameras did pick up the incident and Stan has acted on that although there is certainly no confirmation of that.

However, contact or not, you have placed the victim of the incident (if victim is really the right word), Gary Hart, in second place for his undoubted play acting. Whether Arthur made contact or not there is no doubt that Hart went out of his way to get Arthur in trouble and shortly afterwards went down again when he hadn’t been touched to try and get another player sent off.

Football can do without the Harts of this world, a player who has a reputation even with his own fans for going down.

Burnley Chairman Barry Kiby was victim of the boo boys who claim third place
It is fans who take third place and a number of Burnley supporters were angry at the treatment received by Barry Kilby at half time in that Brighton match when he came out onto the pitch.

Cries of "Get your hand in your pocket" were heard yet this week we have been able to reveal that Barry has indeed dipped his hand into his pocket. On supporter contacted us and described it as "Appalling, ignorant, ungrateful & downright rude, they run the risk of making the man feel unwelcome....talk about biting the hand that feeds, I don't think I have ever felt so cross about something to do with BFC."

At the time of the incident we admitted to being stunned at the response Barry got after turning this club round. Not all think like that though and one club employee told me this week that he felt that Kilby and his board were destroying all the good work previously done by Frank Teasdale.

I suppose you can’t please all of the people all of the time.

Not all the votes centred on Burnley though this week and there was still support to give it to Roy Keane again as more revelations from his book appear. There were votes too for Eamonn Dunphy the writer who is more famous for not covering himself up appropriately for a Millwall team photo during the 1960s.

Ashley Cole also picked up votes for his involvement in the incident that saw one of the Premiership’s new Cisses sent off. The decision has now been rescinded.

Franchise FC also picked up votes again, surely they will all season, after this week asking for supporters’ views on the move to Milton Keynes. "Your views are important to us", they said. And supermarket giant Asda didn’t miss out either as they announced a partnership with Franchise FC at Milton Keynes.

All we need you to do now is keep your eyes open during the next week and send us your NOMINATIONS again before midnight next Thursday for the third Tw*t of the Week of the season.

The winners so far:

Week 1 – Roy Keane (Manchester United)

Week 2 – Jeff Winter (Referee)
