Clarets Mad Tw*t of the Week 2002/03 – Week 14

Tw*t of the Week Craig Hignett applauds the fans having let them down
The winner this week looked all set for second place until he went and opened his mouth again yesterday to bring about another mass of nominations.

It is of course Craig Hignett, currently on loan at Coventry City. Hignett thought it would be a good idea to fuel things ahead of the Burnley v Coventry game by constantly going on about how a Blackburn player was going to Turf Moor to beat the Clarets.

The one problem with this is the fact that you have to go and win or you make yourself look pretty stupid. You make yourself look even more stupid if you go and get yourself sent off during the first half with your side already a couple of goals behind especially when it is in response to an offside decision that was never in question.

Hignett let his temporary club down badly last week with his behaviour and received not an ounce of sympathy from his manager Gary McAllister who gave the impression that he was as disgusted with his loan player as the Burnley fans were amused.

But that’s not all for Hignett – he won’t let the matter drop. Yesterday he claimed that had he stayed on the pitch he would have scored at least two goals because the Burnley defence was not the best. He told anyone daft enough to listen that Steve Davis and Arthur Gnohere were not good enough to stop him doing well.

The record books will say that Hignett didn’t score one never mind two and they will also say that his poor behaviour has cost his club who had to play over half the game with ten men.

Runner Up - Roy Keane, what next from him
Second place is a regular this season, Manchester United’s Roy Keane. Just as you think things are dying down this idiot opens his mouth again.

No content with the goings on within the Republic of Ireland set up, not content with his antics at Sunderland or revealing his intent with the challenge on Alf Inge Haaland he has now opened his mouth regarding Alan Shearer.

Keane was sent off for pushing Shearer last season in a game won by Newcastle 4-3 by referee Steve Bennett. So he waits over a year and then says this week that he wishes he had punched Shearer.

Now I am sure many Burnley fans would love that opportunity but Keane has suggested that with the punishment the same he might as well have been killed for a sheep as a lamb.

The FA are not expected to take any further action against the Manchester United player but it is quite clear that it is high time someone did take some action against him. He seems to think he can bring the game into dispute on a weekly basis.

Millwall’s Steve Claridge has claimed third place for an amazing attack on the supporters of AFC Wimbledon. Claridge, always quick to aim critical remarks towards Turf Moor, has accused these fans of letting down the players at Franchise and claiming that they should be backing the club and also be preparing to continue that support in Milton Keynes.

Third place - Steve Claridge
Apart from the fact that Claridge, a regular TV claptrapper, plays for another club he should realise that supporters are an important part of the game. Those supporters have had their club taken away from them, it appears that Claridge is just about the only one who cannot see that.

He seems to have some strange idea that they will get great support in Milton Keynes if in fact they ever get there. But Claridge has no right to go around having a go at other club’s supporters. He wants to concentrate on playing for his own club.

Others to receive nominations this week were Garry Flitcroft following his men against boys comments, I’m sure we will hear more of that next week and there were also nominations for our own club’s ticket arrangements for the Worthington Cup tie against Manchester United.

We also received a staggering number of nominations for Mark Bosnich, in fact enough to win this week’s award, following news that he had failed a drugs test.

If Bosnich is guilty of this then there is no doubt he will be a likely winner but with the player and the club both denying revelations in a Sunday tabloid then it could well be that Bosnich is in actual fact a victim. We will keep a close eye on this.

That’s it for this week, and now we look forward to week 15. Just send us your NOMINATIONS before midnight next Thursday and all will be revealed next Friday.
