Clarets Mad - Tw*t of the Week, Week 26

Last updated : 19 April 2002 By Tony Scholes

Tw*t of the Week - Gillingham chairman Paul Scally
The winner is Gillingham chairman Paul Scally who won himself a flood of nominations yesterday after disciplining three players for receiving awards from a supporters group. The players in question were Paul Smith, Chris Hope and Barry Ashby.

Their crime was to attend the Gillingham Independent Supporters Club to receive awards after last Saturday's game and before the club sponsor's player of the year evening. To be fair the players had all been instructed not to go but it turns out this is all because Scally does not like the GISC and believes they are against the club a similar situation to that at Burnley between previous chairman Frank Teasdale and CISA.

The players have had to issue apologies besides being fined and Scally claims he has now had enough and has told GISC to come up with the money in the next 30 days and he will hand over the club to them otherwise he will put it on the market. That could mean a Gillingham Football Club with no Paul Scally. Why do I hear nobody complaining?

A frightening looking picture of second place Mr. Pompous of Bradford
Mr. Pompous of Bradford, Geoffrey Richmond, has claimed second place for deciding that he can make decisions on behalf of the Football League. This week he has chosen to invite Celtic and Rangers to join the Nationwide League First Division without any apparent consultation and discussion with anyone else.

Will Mr. Pompous give up his place in the First Division to allow one of them to join? I suspect the answer to that is no so it obviously means he now thinks he has the power to go around relegating clubs.

If the invitation was accepted and the two foreign clubs were allowed to join our First Division then as it stands right now both Rotherham United and Sheffield Wednesday would have to give way to them, they are currently 20th and 21st respectively. That would then force both Northampton Town and Notts County into the 3rd division and worse still Lincoln City and Bristol Rovers would lose league status.

And so it would go on all the way down the pyramid. I'm surprised Richmond has much time for meddling in everyone else's affairs, surely he is far too busy with his constant changing of managers.

ITV Digital are 3rd but would be worthy winners every week
Television companies Carlton and Granada are in third place although I suspect after this week's charade they should be clear winners on a weekly basis. This time they have withdrawn any offers to the Football League and are doing nothing other than to kill football in this country to try and get round their own total incompetence.

There will be more on these two later today and a chance for you all to get straight to the directors of these two companies.

What is going to happen to the Football League should this money not come in is hardly worth thinking about and it is about time Carlton and Granada accepted their responsibilities.

There have been other nominations this week including Sourness (what a surprise), Barry Knight who I think is now going to get nominations on a weekly basis. There were nominations too for Matt Jansen for getting himself selected for England and then being ill and there was me thinking he had done the nation a favour.

That's Week 26 over with and now we look forward to next week after another seven days in the world of football. As always send us your NOMINATIONS by midnight next Thursday and we will bring you news of the winner next Friday morning.
