Thanks Palace – it is Division One football next season

Richard Chaplow - subdued performance
It was all ears to the radios and checks on internet mobile phones at the end as news came through that Crystal Palace had beaten Walsall to end our fears of a return to Division Two.

That became necessary because we turned in yet another performance that was a million miles away from being acceptable at this level of football, and allowed a very poor Rotherham team to win 3-0.

In over twenty years of visiting Millmoor I am yet to see a game of football of any quality and certainly nothing changed here with the Clarets gifting them the points with even more give away goals.

It all started reasonably well and twice we carved open the home defence in the first few minutes, this after Brian Jensen had made two routine saves. We couldn’t get a shot on target on either occasion, the harsh reality is we only managed one effort on target in the entire ninety minutes.

Rotherham weren’t really troubling us but they took the lead on the quarter hour with another ridiculous give away goal and needless to say keeper Jensen was right in the thick of it. It was just a long ball that Martin Butler too easily got on to but Jensen got caught in no mans land and made it far too easy for Butler to score.

If that was bad then a second goal six minutes before half time was even worse. Mo Camara might as well have not been there for all the good he did as they got through on our left hand side but as the ball came towards Robbie Stockdale he was presented with the easiest of chances when Jensen looked to bottle it when he should have been collecting the ball.

Lenny Johnrose turned on the Danish keeper in no uncertain terms and this is not the first such occasion this season. The defenders certainly have no confidence in him, they have made that obvious all season, and here we were two down despite having much of the possession.

Half time came and scores were being checked, Walsall were still level at Palace and that was the key match.

Brian Jensen - at fault with first two goals
Both full backs were withdrawn for the second half. Roche was injured whilst Camara was just awful and could hardly have stayed on any longer. Paul Weller and Graham Branch moved back with Luke Chadwick and Dele Adebola coming on. Adebola didn’t look as though he had come on to inject any pace.

If we had more of the play in the first half then we certainly did in the second half but as bad as Rotherham looked at the back there was not a moment when we really looked as though we might get back into the game.

There was no real conviction and no obvious determination to drag ourselves back into the game and there was never any need for last ditch defending from the home side.

Matt O’Neill, out for some time with tendonitis, got a rare outing with his third substitute appearance of the season when he replaced Richard Chaplow, even Chappy was subdued today.

The closing minutes belonged though to Rotherham when first Michael Proctor hit the bar and then scored from the spot after Graham Branch handled. That was 3-0 and incredibly that was the tenth time this season we have conceded three or more in a game. Mind you that is an improvement on last season.

Stan apologised to the fans but that is beginning to sound like a stuck record now and this was just one in a whole series of unsatisfactory performances.

It was no better in places off the pitch either with one group of so called supporters intent on creating an awful atmosphere. A number were escorted out of the ground during the game but it made no difference. We really shouldn’t have to put up with this.

All in all then a bad day – well not quite. As we were leaving the ground came news of Andy Johnson’s late winner for Palace which means Walsall can no longer catch us. Walsall are now favourites to join BRBC and Franchise in Division Two. Gillingham are the only other candidates.

It hardly seemed like a day to celebrate but it does mean we are now likely to be welcoming Leeds to the Turf for a league game, the first time for 22 years, when we could so easily have been hosting Doncaster.

This sort of performance is not acceptable though and if there are going to have to be some big changes next season if we are not to face this again.
