Youths go down in tough start

Adam Kay - scored from the spot
Andy's youth reports from Gawthorpe usually feature a weather report and having gone down there this afternoon armed with waterproofs, long sleeved top and an umbrella I found the one thing I really needed was a hat to keep the sun off my head. It came out just before kick off leaving us sweltering in the heat for ninety minutes.

The game didn't get off to the best of starts for us and we were a goal down almost from the kick off, but to our credit we fought back and played some very good football at times. It was no more than we deserved when we got back into it with what looked as though it could have been a fortuitous penalty.

Rob Turner, playing as a lone striker, made a run into the Bolton box on the left hand side and went down under the challenge. The referee, who was considerably closer than I was, didn't hesitate and pointed immediately to the spot. Adam Kay stepped up and hit his spot kick right into the corner of the net to the goalkeeper's left, sending him the wrong way.

We could even have gone in front, but ended the half level and with an injury when Alex McDonald, playing down the right hand side, limped off. It had been a good showing from the young Clarets but things did get more difficult in the second half.

That second half brought with it four goals, all for the visitors. There's no doubting they looked a strong side, and had two or three outstanding individuals in their side, but the final score of 5-1 I felt flattered them somewhat and we didn't deserve to be on the end of that scoreline.

We've got warm up games to come against Stoke City and Newcastle United (both away), then the lads head for Scotland and games against St Mirren and Rangers, before the league season gets underway on 18th August with an away game against Accrington.

Today's team was: Jonathan Sergeant (Stef Ritchie), Dean Stott, Nik Kudiersky, Chris Lynch, Matt Lomas, Alex McDonald (Ben Hoskin), Chris Anderson (Dil Chaggar), Adam Kay, Alex-Ray Harvey, Lewis Craig, Rob Turner.
