Youths fall to defeat in opening game

Heavy rain and a howling gale made it tricky for both sides but it was Morecambe who dominated the game and finally got the winning goal with twenty minutes to go, the goal coming from a header following a left wing cross.

The league had got underway four days earlier when Rochdale entertained Wrexham at Rossendale United's Dark Lane but came unstuck with the Welsh side, winners of the league last season, running out 4-0 winners.

Both sides, somewhat surprisingly, had opposite results on Saturday. Rochdale went to Carlisle and won whilst Wrexham were beaten at Shrewsbury.

Over the past few seasons Oldham have had the reputation for being the big scorers in this league and they were at it again, albeit against perennial strugglers Accrington. They hit them for seven whilst Preston were also amongst the goals with four against Bury.

We've a full fixture list again this weekend with the Clarets playing their first home game, but please note the Football League have reported that this game will now be played a day earlier than initially scheduled, going ahead at Gawthorpe this Friday with a 2:00 p.m. kick off.

Below are the opening results in the league along with the fixtures for this weekend.
