Youths back to winning ways

Last updated : 24 April 2006 By Tony Scholes
It's the first win for the decimated side in the league since the last Saturday in January, when a team including many centre of excellence players had beaten Wrexham. It's been a difficult time with many of the players no longer available and this result will give them a boost.

Elsewhere in the league there was a big shock with champions Oldham losing, they were beaten 3-2 at Wigan in a game played on Friday. They are still a long way clear though and below them a 3-0 win against Wrexham has virtually assured Preston of second place in the league.

Wrexham are in what looks to be a three way fight to avoid finishing bottom and the other two, Bury and Macclesfield were also beaten with Macclesfield remaining bottom on goal difference.

In the Pontin's Holiday League, Carlisle have clinched the title and will now go into the play offs, although winning them gets you nowhere. They made sure of it with a convincing win over Blackpool last week and have lost just three times all season including an early season game against the Clarets. We take them on tonight in the return fixture, one that has already been called off twice.

Reserve results last week:

Burnley 3 Tranmere 3
Bury 3 Preston 2
Carlisle 4 Blackpool 1
Wrexham 3 Shrewsbury 0
