Youth team slip to third

Last updated : 20 March 2006 By Tony Scholes
There has been a big change in fortunes for the lads since that cup win back in January, just five days later we went out of the FA Youth Cup to Liverpool, a team that have just reached the final, and results have suffered since.

It was something of a different Burnley side that played without any of the players set to be released at the end of the season and was made up of first year apprentices, under-16 players and even one player from the under-15 team.

The Burnley team was: Lee Matthews, Dean Stott, Jack Overson, Hoskin (Ash Young), Paul Casey, Dale Underwood, Adam Kay, Connor Smith (Thomas Bradley), Ali Akbar, Jay Rodriguez, Rob Turner (Alex McDonald).

The result means we have slipped to third place in the league with Preston going above us following a 1-0 win at Wigan but there's no catching leaders Oldham and their goalscoring exploits, they've not hit 80 league goals following a massive 9-0 win over Macclesfield.

We will next be in action this coming Saturday when we entertain Rochdale at Gawthorpe although a number of the youth players will be involved in the reserve team game on Wednesday at Accrington when we will be hoping to play just our second home game since the first week in October, this also against Rochdale.

Saturday's results:

Blackpool 1 Shrewsbury 0
Bury 0 Stockport 2
Chester 3 Burnley 1
Oldham 9 Macclesfield 0
Rochdale 2 Walsall 0
Tranmere 1 Wrexham 0
Wigan 0 Preston 1

This weekend's fixtures:

Burnley v Rochdale
Carlisle v Bury
Macclesfield v Blackpool
Preston v Chester
Shrewsbury v Oldham
Stockport v Tranmere
Walsall v Port Vale
Wrexham v Wigan
