Wrexham almost there in the Alliance title chase

They could get the title today, should Walsall fail to beat Blackpool at home, but if not would require one point from their last game against Burnley this Saturday to make things certain. The simple maths now are that Wrexham would have to lose to the Clarets and Walsall would have to win all their remaining three games. No other club can now win the league.

It was a strange weekend. Things had been set up in Wrexham's favour when they beat second place Preston last Wednesday, on a day when Rochdale also did their chances no harm with a massive 7-1 win at Blackpool.

That left four of them in with a chance but Wrexham as clear favourites. Given they'd lost just once all season it looked a mere formality, but they doubled the figure in the defeats column to two at Bury only to learn that a point would have been good enough.

Rochdale were all but out of it and they ended Preston's hopes by securing a draw against them and that left just Walsall. They'd only lost twice but went down to the young Burnley side at Gawthorpe although, because of games in hand, remain in with that slim chance.

Elsewhere, there were Saturday wins for Blackpool, Carlisle, Fleetwood, Port Vale and Shrewsbury and Tranmere, beaten on Saturday, won again two days ago, winning at Bury.

There is a full fixture list this coming Saturday but before that there are four games this afternoon. Burnley are involved away on both dates, playing at Port Vale today and at Wrexham on Saturday and these two games will bring our Youth Alliance League season to an end.

The results, fixtures, Burnley's goalscorers and the current league table are all below.
