Walsall are new Alliance leaders

Walsall started the day in second place and turned in a good performance to beat Tranmere 3-0. But I don't think they could have envisaged that taking them to the top of the league with Rochdale only requiring a point at Wrexham to stay top.

Wrexham, usually very strong at this level, have had a difficult start to the season. They'd won just once in seven games and kicked off with only Morecambe, without a win, below them in the table.

They turned the table on its head, however, beating the league leaders 6-2 at their Colliers Park training ground and that leaves Walsall with a one point lead at the top of the table.

It could have been even worse for Rochdale. Had they lost by one further goal they would have dropped behind Oldham on goal difference; they remain second, above the Latics, on goals scored.

A win for Preston would have seen them level on points with Walsall and in second place but they too were surprisingly beaten by Fleetwood who, like Wrexham, were thankful for the win to lift them a few further points clear of the bottom.

Walsall's win also saw Burnley move up a place despite the shock defeat at Accrington. We started the day behind Tranmere on goal difference but have now moved above them due to their 3-0 defeat.

We head a group of five teams in mid table with 11 points but we've played a game more than three of them.

Shrewsbury are now next to bottom, above winless Morecambe, having lost at home to Macclesfield. Wigan beat Carlisle with Blackpool and Bury drawing in the remaining game.

With an odd number of teams in the league it is our turn to miss out this Saturday and our next game comes a week later when we face Morecambe at home, hopeful of getting our season back on track against a team that has conceded 22 goals in 8 games and has a minus 17 goal difference.
