We climbed even closer to the top two, and with games in hand, after they both unexpectedly dropped points in home games. Top of the league Chester played bottom place Wrexham in a derby but Wrexham, still without a win, came away with the honours after a hard earned point from a goalless draw.

Over at Deepdale, Preston had to come from behind to earn their point against Morecambe but the big news for Preston was that Paul McKenna played and came through ninety minutes. He's had groin surgery and this was his first run out since February when he played in the Championship for Preston at Cardiff. North End earned themselves a point with an equaliser from Neil Mellor and that was enough to keep them right behind Chester on goal difference.

Burnley weren't the only side to win by three goals. Both Manchester City and Blackpool recorded similar victories and like the Clarets won away from home. City won 3-0 at Tranmere with goals from Paul Marshall, Angelos Tsiakilis and David Ball.

For Blackpool it was a 4-1 win at Bury. Dany Mitcheley got two but their other scorers were experienced first team players Scott Vernon and Claus Jorgensen. In the one remaining game Accrington beat Carlisle 4-2 but the television being switched on in the Crown is bigger news in Hyndburn than any football result.

The results, and next set of fixtures are shown below and the Clarets will next be in action a week next Wednesday when we play Bury at Accrington, just across the car park and down the steps from the television.

This week's results

Accrington 4 Carlisle 2
