Up one and down one for the reserves

Apart from Sunderland it was a week when most teams found it difficult to score goals with just one goal scored in each of the other three games.

Before looking at the Sunderland game we'll concentrate on the top two, Manchester United and Liverpool, who were both playing in their derbies.

United travelled across Manchester to play City and it was the home side who won the game at the Regional Athletics Arena with a first half goal from Alex Nimely. A ball into the box from Greg Cunningham from almost the half way line was met on the volley from Nimely who gave United keeper Ron-Robert Zieler little hope as the ball arced over him.

City always looked comfortable and things got easier for them twelve minutes into the second half when United half time substitute Scott Wootten was shown a straight red card.

That result took City level on points with United whilst over on Merseyside anything for Liverpool would see them take over at the top and that's exactly what they did as they beat Everton at Halton Stadium by the same 1-0 scoreline.

It all looked as though it was going to be a goalless first half but right on the whistle Shane Duffy fouled Nathan Eccleston and the Liverpool striker got up to take the penalty and give the visitors the lead.

Everton fought back after the break but couldn't find an equaliser and the three points gained by Liverpool took them clear at the top.

Burnley's game against Wigan fell victim to the weather with the Accrington pitch unfit and in the other game played there were no fewer than seven goals as Bolton travelled to Hetton to play Sunderland.

Bolton went in front when Danny Ward scored a screamer but by half time it was Sunderland in front as they came back with goals from Roy O'Donovan and Nathan Luscombe.

If Bolton had any hopes of getting back into it in the second half their hopes were soon dashed as O'Donovan quickly scored another two to complete his hat trick and in the end Sunderland were easy 6-1 winners with David Healy scoring the fifth and Luscombe getting his second to complete the scoring.

Bolton were above Burnley with a goal difference that was one better than ours but this defeat saw them drop below us. However, we knew that whoever won the following night between Hull and Blackburn would go above us.

The good news was that it was Hull and just as in two of the games the previous night the score was 1-0. The goal came after just four minutes from Daniel Cousin who was close to joining the Clarets on loan just before the transfer window closed.

That was enough to lift Hull up to fourth in the table, just above us on goal difference.

There are just three fixtures next week and again we don't play. We were scheduled to play Manchester United at Altrincham but that game has now been put back to 11th February 2010.

Our next game is against Bolton on Monday 23rd November at the Lancashire FA Headquarters in Leyland.
