This week's games were played over four nights with Bolton kicking things off on Monday when they hosted bottom of the league Wigan Athletic. The visitors remained pointless at the end with Bolton winning the game comfortably.

The two goalkeepers kept the score at 0-0 during the first half but it was all Bolton after the break with Ricardo Vaz Te, on his way back after a year out injured, giving them the lead on 59 minutes.

Vaz Te could have had another but Bolton wrapped it up with two goals from Danny Ward who had come on as a substitute.

One day later and there were two games. Firstly Everton, still looking for their first points since the win against Burnley, were beaten 3-0 in their home game against Blackburn.

The only positive on the night for Everton was former Blackburn defender Lucas Neill getting a full game in but goals from Steven Reid and David Hoilett in the first half and an Aaron Doran penalty after the break gave the visitors a comfortable win.

On the same night Manchester City's unbeaten start came to an end as they suffered a 2-0 home defeat against Liverpool for whom Daniel Agger played in his return from injury. David Ngog got the first goal with Steven Irwin netting the second.

Wednesday saw Burnley beat Hull 2-1 at Accrington, previously reported, and last night it was Manchester United who had a resounding 4-0 win over last season's winners Sunderland.

United, coached by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and former Claret Warren Joyce, were soon in front through Norwegian Magnus Eikrem. His fellow countryman Joshua King got the second and it was 3-0 at half time with Eikrem getting a second.

Not to be outdone King also got his second in the second half to complete the scoring and that result was enough to take Manchester United to the top of the league on goal difference from Liverpool and Manchester City.
