Top two switch places in Alliance

Another hat trick for Jason Gilchrist

It was a weekend of goals with a total of 35 goals in eight games; Carlisle equalling the 6-1 scoreline by which we beat Blackpool, a game that saw Jason Gilchrist net a second successive hat trick.

Once Preston had won their game, the only way they could drop in the league was if Carlisle won by three goals or more. That they did and they now occupy top spot again on goals scored.

Surprisingly, Morecambe took the lead against Carlisle as the home side made a disappointing start to the game. It was 4-1 by half time and two more second half goals completed the scoring.

The goals came from six different scorers, but coach Eric Kinder said of that: "With the six goals it's great to see six different scorers, but I think I'd rather have one player who got five of them. We want to see a player who has that ruthless streak and who is a natural goalscorer. They are the ones who will nick a game by the odd goal for you."

The two chasing clubs kept the pressure on by both winning. Wrexham remain a point behind after winning at Walsall and Rochdale saw off bottom of the league Tranmere and they are a further point behind. Both have a game in hand on the top two.

Elsewhere there were wins for both Fleetwood and Oldham, and for Fleetwood it was just their second victory since joining the Youth Alliance League at the start of the season.

The top two are both away this coming Saturday. Preston travel to Morecambe who, like Tranmere, are still to win this season and Carlisle will be pitching up at Gawthorpe on Saturday morning.
