Thompson is guest

Les Thompson joined Burnley in the summer of 1992, the first new player following our promotion from Division One. We got him for just about nothing because his club Maidstone United were heading out of business.

He was hardly a success during his first season at the Turf and made just three appearances in the league including one as a substitute. He was initially kept out by Joe Jakub and then Paul Wilson who came in from Halifax later in the season.

That was all to change though in 1993 and he was in the starting line when the season got underway with a 2-1 win against Port Vale. The game saw a Port Vale player sent off after an incident with Thompson and it wasn’t to be the last time that happened either.

His second season was in complete contrast to his first and he played 49 games including 36 in the league. It culminated in that glorious day at Wembley when once again a player was sent off following an incident involving him.

In 1992 he had signed a two-year contract and he was offered a new deal after the play off victory. It remained unsigned and at the age of 25 his league career was over with Chris Vinnicombe coming in as his replacement. Les moved on and signed for Accrington Stanley.

He is back at the Turf these days and is one of the coaches at the club’s Centre of Excellence as we look to find young players for the future.
