This was Burnley, not Barcelona

City's next opponents at this level are Barcelona in the new NextGen Series and they billed this game as their final warm up game whilst I'm sure not expecting quite as tough a game as they got.

A late goal from Dominic Knowles gave us a well earned draw, this after City had gone 2-1 in front following an early opener from Shay McCartan. It proved to be a game of four good goals and some excellent football.

The opening exchanges suggested it might be a tough night for us but we stunned our hosts by taking the lead with a fantastic individual effort from McCartan. He picked the ball up on the right hand side and his pace left defender Courtney Meppen-Walter trailing. Once in the box he hit a low shot across goalkeeper Eirik Johansen into the far corner.

City responded with some fine football, but we defended well and got forward well too, continuing to give City problems defensively.

Their best player during this period was undoubtedly Harry Bunn, who I learned is the son of former Oldham forward Frankie Bunn, and it was he who grabbed an equaliser just four minutes before the break.

Goalkeeper Jon Stewart had been in excellent form again but he had absolutely no chance as Bunn shot from just outside the box through a ruck of players into the corner.

They deserved the equaliser no doubt but Burnley were close to regaining the lead when McCartan's pace again got the better of the home defence. This time the Irishman was forced just too wide and couldn't get a shot on target.

For much of the second half it was City who had the upper hand but we worked so hard to close them down and to get onto the ball when we could. The score remained at 1-1 until the 72nd minute when we fell behind but it took something special.

Chris Chantler got round the outside of Ross Wilson down their left wing and then hit an absolute screamer past substitute goalkeeper, trialist Matt Tomlinson. The lad had no chance as it flew past him.

Maybe I'm a pessimist but I thought they might go on to extend that lead. However, our lads fought back brilliantly and had the majority of the play for the remainder of the game.

On 78 minutes the ball was played across to Adam Evans whose shot from the left hand side was sliced right across the edge of the penalty box. It dropped conveniently for Dominic Knowles who hit a low shot right into the bottom corner.

There was only ever going to be one winner after that as we put City under some real pressure. Wilson, Aryn Williams and Steven Hewitt all came close but we couldn't just force a winner and the referee blew time with the score at 2-2.

Two contrasting styles but good football played by both sides. Our next game is Macclesfield, City go on to play Barcelona. We're worlds apart, but for 90 minutes tonight, in the end, there was nothing between the two sides.
