Still five points clear

Marc Pugh - scored our winner from the penalty spot
It took a penalty to separate the sides, and that was taken by Marc Pugh for his fourteenth youth team goal of the season, his second from the penalty spot. The defeat leaves Shrewsbury rooted to the bottom of the league but for the Clarets it maintains the five point lead at the top of the league.

Both Preston and Wigan were winners, against Bury and Stockport respectively, and they move up into the next two places after Tranmere dropped points, drawing their game 2-2 at Chester.

Oldham are up to fourth again and were back amongst the goals with a 4-1 home win against Carlisle, taking their tally to 33 league goals this season, 12 more than the Clarets.

In most seasons Preston and Wigan could expect to be fighting it out at the top but Burnley’s start is a remarkable one – the win was their ninth from the start of the season, eight of those in the league and one in the Youth Alliance Cup.

It is to the Alliance Cup that we turn again this coming Saturday when we play our second round tie at Boston, having seen off Rotherham 3-1 back at the end of September. It really is well done to the lads for this start, and that’s all of them and not just Pughy who right now just cannot stop scoring.

The weekend results:

Blackpool 1 Rochdale 3

Bury 1 Tranmere 3

Chester 2 Tranmere 2
