Shrews go top after double win

Preston have been top virtually all season and on Saturday came up against the side who have been closest to them for much of the time, Walsall. North End had no difficulty in seeing off the fading Saddlers and easily won the game 5-0.

But Shrewsbury have been putting a run of results together. They beat Macclesfield in midweek and then beat Carlisle on Saturday to go a point clear at the top, although Preston do have two games in hand.

Stockport remain a threat. The club might be struggling right now but their youngsters won again, this time against now bottom club Morecambe, and with games in hand they could still give the top two a run for their money.

Down at the bottom, Accrington won for just the second time this season when they travelled to last year's champions Wrexham and won 2-0.

Elsewhere there were wins for Tranmere and Rochdale whilst the Clarets, as reported earlier, finally got a game in and won 3-0 in a friendly against Blackpool at Squires Gate.

We should be back in league action this week, weather permitting, when we entertain bottom of the league Morecambe. The recent results and next fixtures are shown below.
