Russians give Clarets a second Milk Cup defeat

Liam Newman - two goals in an impressive performance
Midfielder Newman, who had missed the opening game, scored twice and made a third goal in a 5-3 defeat to Trudovye Rezervy in Coleraine.

Burnley were forced to make changes to the side that lost harshly to Co Londonderry the previous night - the consensus among the Clarets' fans was the penalty award and red card were "a travesty".

Ed Williams was brought in at centre half to replace the suspended Curtis Woods while Ross Wilson started in place of Dean Overson. Overson limped out of the first match and it was later revealed that he had broken his ankle in three places.

Wilson started at the right side of midfield meaning captain Dom Knowles slotted in at right back.

After the `glamour' opening match at the Limavady Showgrounds, the Clarets were given a taste of the real Milk Cup - in the drizzle on a remote playing field at the University of Ulster's Coleraine campus.

The youths appeared more comfortable in the less salubrious surroundings, racing into a 2-0 lead in the first 10 minutes by passing the ball and moving well.

Most early attacks went through Newman and he played a pivotal part in both goals. The first came after four minutes when he cut in from the left wing and sent a curling shot past the diving keeper.

He then turned provider, crossing from a corner for Williams to head home. At 2-0 it looked like the young Clarets would run out easy winners and score enough goals to qualify for the quarter finals.

It also looked like luck was on Burnley's side. Rezervy danger-man Gleb Koslov wasted a one-on-one chance when put clear of the defence, despite trialist keeper Will Fuller remaining rooted to his goal line.

Rezervy then enjoyed a good spell of play but Burnley's centre half pairing of Williams and Stephen Edwards stubbed out attack after attack.

Just before the half hour Koslov pulled one back for Rezervy after cutting in from the left and sliding the ball under Fuller.

Irish trialist James Kavanagh shot over as Burnley enjoyed a strong finish, but they were hit on the break moments before half time when Denis Labuzo scored to send the two sides in level at the break.

The first chance of the second half fell to forward Joe Jackson but he shot wide.

Rezervy did little to trouble Fuller but still managed to score three more goals.

The keeper from Ipswich failed to hold a tame header allowing Koslov to stab home his second. Fuller also gifted Koslov his third by again dropping what appeared to be a simple catch.

The Russians made it 5-2 when Fuller stayed put on his line as Pavel Rybakov broke clear of the Burnley defence. His first effort was saved but he poked home the rebound.

With time running out Newman scored his second goal after a cross from substitute James Taylor.

The defeat left Burnley in last place with no points meaning they must now compete for the Dunluce Trophy, a four-team mini-league. The Clarets' first opponents are Co Fermanagh. The venues will only get more mundane.
