Rochdale go five points clear in the Alliance

A week ago they were joint top of the league with Walsall. Both of them had nine points from three games but Rochdale moved ahead with a midweek win against Blackpool before beating the other Fylde club Fleetwood on Saturday.

That was guaranteed to leave them three points clear but Walsall were another club to lose their 100 per cent start when they were held to a 0-0 draw by Wigan. They now sit just behind Oldham who, apart from losing 3-0 to the Clarets, have also made a strong start. A third win for them, a resounding 5-0 win at Bury, has taken them to within a point of Walsall.

Down at the other end, both Morecambe and Shrewsbury are searching for their first point of the season. Neither played on Saturday which now leaves both of them a point behind Wrexham.

The Welsh club are usually very strong at youth level but they've had a disappointing start to the season. They were able to pick up a point from a 1-1 draw against Accrington on Saturday and that was their first point having lost the first three games.

They are back home on Saturday when the Clarets travel to Colliers Park, the Conference club's training ground, for what is our next fixture.

We got a second successive draw, as previously reported, and in the other games there were wins for both Carlisle and Preston.
