Reserves say farewell to Pontin's Premier

Our place looks set to be taken by Wigan or the Unprofessionals as we can look forward to exciting matches against such as Carlisle, Shrewsbury and Macclesfield next season.

A glance at the league table shows that we are six points behind both Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley but with these two clubs still to play each other at least one of them will still pick up extra points.

In true first team style tonight we dropped points in a game that could have been won with the Clarets twice in front.

Our first goal was similar to the first goal last night in that it was scored by a member of the opposition although on this occasion he was playing for us. Having previously lunged at the North End keeper and then seen a volley go just over Fola Onibuje, on trial with the Clarets, headed in. At six feet and a lot tall he had no difficulty getting above the defenders.

We had scored earlier but incredibly had it ruled out for offside with the assistant referee obviously not seeing the visitors left-back on the post. It was a poor decision but there was no reaction from the Weary Whinger in the stand.

He had been there the night before too, which probably accounted for the directors box being full of people fast asleep just before kick off tonight.

The half time score was 1-0 and we really should have increased it in the early stages of the second half but missed a couple of good chances. And as is always seemingly the case at the Turf we conceded an equaliser.

We were soon back in front with a well taken goal from Rhys Carpenter as he turned to hit a left foot shot from ten yards out.

It really looked as though we were going to hang in for another week before the drop was confirmed but in the last minute of the game Preston equalised with a well taken free kick from outside the box.

It ended 2-2, there had been no red cards, no diving from Preston forwards although WW was shaking his head over something at the final whistle.

It has been a disappointing season for the reserves with only four wins to date and only one at Turf Moor. Mind you results apparently don’t matter. No wonder only 150 were watching tonight.

The teams were,

Burnley: Michael Hale, Chris Scott, Danny Pitham (Neal Trotman 65), Ryan Townsend, Paul Scott, Marc Pugh, Darrell Avery, Nicky Platt, Tom Ince (Kyle Lafferty 65), Rhys Carpenter, Fola Onibuje (Alex Taylor 87). Subs not used: Mark Crossley, Gary Carter.

Preston: Tom Upson, Anthony Warriner, James Archer, Kyle Armstrong, Kiaran Hopkinson, Warren Beattie, Ashley Parrilon (Chris Neal 85), Richard Baker, Mark Jackson, Aaron McConville, Ashley Stott (Paul Kenworthy 45).
