Reserves open with a defeat

Ben Hoskin - played the full 90 minutes
Everton included Yakubu who was returning from injury and he opened the scoring with just 31 seconds on the clock when he latched on to a long ball from James McCarten before slotting home past Danny McDonald to the keeper's left.

Things got worse for the Clarets when Everton doubled that lead with only seven minutes gone. This time Yakubu was the provider, setting up Dan Gosling to finish.

It was very much Everton on top in the first half but, besides both sides having good penalty shouts turned down, we did get in a couple of efforts. The first was an Alex-Ray Harvey shot that went over the bar and right on half time Wes Fletcher wasted a good opportunity from 12 yards.

It was very much a similar pattern in the second half with the home side always in the ascendancy. Yakubu was substituted with just over twenty minutes to go and his replacement Cody Arnoux completed the scoring eight minutes from time, heading home an Adam Forshaw cross.

The two big positives for the Clarets were the return from injury of two players. Michael Duff, who hasn't played since the draw against Portland Timbers, played just over an hour. Ben Hoskin, who is fighting back to fitness after missing much of last season, played the whole game.

The teams were;

Everton: Iain Turner, Shkodran Mustafi, Moses Barnett, James Wallace (Anton Peterlin 72), Shane Duffy, James McCarten, Dan Gosling (Adam Forshaw 45), Hope Akpan, Kieran Agard, Yakubu (Cody Arnoux 69), Jose Baxter. Subs not used: Roberts, Lewis Codling.

Burnley: Danny McDonald, Ben Hoskin, Michael Duff (Curtis Woods 61), Tom Anderson, Jake McEneaney, Ross Wilson (Oliver Devenney 65), Chris Anderson, Alex-Ray Harvey, Michael King, Dom Knowles (Liam Newman 65), Wes Fletcher. Subs not used: Dave Lynch, Joe Jackson.
