Reserves bring Pontin's season to an end

Marc Pugh - reserve team leading scorer with six goals
In a nondescript first half the Clarets went in level at half time with the score at 0-0 but that we were thankful to goalkeeper Mark Crossley who saved a penalty just a couple of minutes before the break.

Ten minutes into the second half though and we found ourselves 2-0 down and despite playing some neat football there was no way back and Oldham completed the scoring near the end.

It brought the heaviest defeat since a 4-1 loss against Rochdale at the home of Rossendale United which kicked off the season back in August, in a season that has seen us finish in 7th place in a twelve team league.

Very much similar to the first team, goals have been at a premium and the 24 from 22 games is better only than Rochdale’s, they never seemed to hit the heights again after that win against us.

Marc Pugh is the leading scorer with six goals, two of those from the penalty spot, whilst both Alex Taylor and Amadou Sanokho scored four times.

Manchester United have won the league, finishing five points above runners up Carlisle. They won’t be stepping up into the Premier Division though, they have opted to pull out of the league altogether after just one year.

Their replacements will be Wigan (should their first team not reach the Premiership) who have finished next to bottom of the higher league with Bradford City bottom.

The teams for our last match at Oldham were,

Oldham: Shwan Jalal, Paul Armstrong, Adam Griffin (Charlie Treacy 64), Chris Lever, Paul Booth, Jason Taylor, Chris Taylor, Chris Baguley, Chris Hall, Matty Wolfenden (Lewis Alessandra 74), Wes Wilkinson (Andrew Smalley 74). Sub not used: Jason Walker.

Burnley: Mark Crossley, Rob Henry, Paul Scott, Chris McCann, Martin Reilly, Marc Pugh, Nicky Platt, Joe Booth, Mark Yates (Tom Ince 55), Matt O’Neill, Kyle Lafferty. Subs not used: Michael Hale, Neal Trotman, Cayne Hanley.
