Reserve show first team the way

Steve Cotterill - was there to see the reserves get off to a winning start
Again it was a young side turning out for Burnley but the fans present had their first chance to take a look at new signing Karl Bermingham, who played up front, looking to impress ahead of the weekend.

We started much the brighter side and could have been way ahead with a string of chances in the opening quarter hour. Carlisle had very little in the way of opportunities but we did clear one effort of theirs off the line.

Our forward line was looking very lively but it was Carlisle who, against the run of play, drew first blood. A long ball forward was taken down by McLen, who crossed for Murray to poke home.

We didn’t let this effect us though and continued to pound on the visitors. A break up the left saw Rob Turner break into the box where he was hacked down. The guilty defender saw red and it was up to Paul Casey to roll in the rebound from his missed spot kick.

Half time saw Bermingham replaced by Kyle Lafferty and he was involved in the move which saw Burnley take the lead. The ball started on the left of the field and was swiftly moved along the forward line, through Lafferty and out to Marc Pugh on the wing. It took two attempts to get the ball across but when he did it arrowed onto the foot of Rob Turner who couldn’t miss.

Again we had more opportunities as we looked to capitalise on our pressure and Casey again was on the spot to finish of a move involving Connor Smith and Turner, making it 3-1.

We then made some substitutions with Platt and Akbar coming on. The tempo didn’t suffer though as Lafferty, Casey and Turner found themselves with chances. Carlisle could have made it interesting when presented with an empty net but squandered the opening.

We immediately made them pay as Casey completed his hat-trick with a deflected drive, finishing the scoring for the evening. F/T 4-1.

In summary it was an accomplished that could easily have seen by more goals for us. Mark Yates will be very pleased with how this season has started and will no doubt hope for more of the same from his young charges in the weeks to come.

Team: Crossley, Overson, Rodriguez (Platt), Blackler, Reilly, Underwood, Pugh (Akbar), Smith, Bermingham (Lafferty), Casey, Turner. Sub not used: Henry.
