Reserve game ends in stalemate

On a bitterly cold night with the occasional visit of snow we were treated to a game that was virtually without goalmouth action from start to finish.

Both sides fielded inexperienced teams with the Clarets under the charges of Terry Pashley and Jimmy Robson with regular coaches Ronnie Jepson and Mick Docherty away with the first team in Spain. We even had a substitute physio down on the bench.

In fact the physios gave us much of the action in a first half that seemed to be littered with knocks as one player after the other went down.

Marc Pugh tried to get the Clarets going with some runs down the right hand side but defences were on top and neither side seriously threatened a goal although Clarets keeper Michael Hale did have to make one excellent save in the closing stages.

Young Irish striker Kyle Lafferty got little chance to impress and was substituted early in the second half and replaced by Nicky Platt, who will also be joining the club as a scholar next season.

The point won’t be of much use to either side in the battle against relegation and with time running out it looks like the great escape of last season is to have had done nothing other than to delay the drop by one year.

We’ll next be in action a week next Tuesday with a trip to Hillsborough to take on Sheffield Wednesday.

Tonight’s teams were:

Burnley: Michael Hale, Danny Pitham, Gary Carter, Ryan Townsend, Paul Scott, Marc Pugh, Darrell Avery, Joe Booth, Tom Ince, Rhys Carpenter, Kyle Lafferty (Nicky Platt 59). Subs not used: Mark Crossley, Neal Trotman, Rob Henry, Cayne Hanley.

Barnsley: Danny Alcock, Thomas Harban, Robert Atkinson, Ryan Laight, Dale Tongue, Chris Lumsdon, Craig Rocastle (Nicky Rowe 63), Arron Davies (Richard Batley 63), Griff Jones, Adam Oldham, Tom Baker. Subs not used: Simon Heslop, Marc Shackleton, Stefan Holt.
