Preston are new Alliance leaders

With the young Clarets engaged in the FA Youth Cup semi-final against Blackburn we knew that we might drop two places with both Preston and Walsall having two league games and kicking off the week four and five points behind us respectively.

Preston won both those games leaving them two points clear of us, although we do now have two games in hand, but the good news came on Saturday with Walsall unable to follow up their midweek win against Shewsbury with another and having to settle for a draw at Macclesfield.

It leaves them just a point behind us but it is us who now have a game in hand and that means the league is very much in our hands and I can see only a glut of fixtures, and the programme will be even heavier if we reach the final of the youth cup, preventing us from winning the league.

Teams are catching up now with previously postponed games and there was a win in midweek for Bury as well as those for Preston and Walsall.

Port Vale, Tranmere Rovers and Wigan were the other winners on Saturday with Shrewsbury and Wrexham sharing the spoils just as Macclesfield and Walsall did.

Whatever happens now in the league, there is only the top three in with any chance of winning the title and we are so well placed to win it for the first time.

All of the top three play this week. Walsall will go above us for two days should they get any sort of result on Thursday against Carlisle and on Saturday Preston are at home to Stockport with the Clarets back at Gawthorpe against Wrexham.
