Oldham take second place in Alliance

Last updated : 16 April 2014 By Tony Scholes

Oldham have ended the season on 51 points, seven points behind champions Blackpool but with a game in hand. They won't be playing that game, but had it been played, and they'd lost, it could have opened the way for Rochdale who would then have only needed to overturn a goal difference of three.

But the Football League decided some weeks ago that the fixtures weren't going to be completed and so the table has been decided on points per game rather than points gained, so there is no requirement for Oldham and Rochdale to play those last games.

It was a good Saturday at the top of the league with all of the clubs now in the top seven having won, but it was down at the bottom where we had the most intriguing result.

Morecambe have been bottom of the league all season and for much of it there didn't seem to be a remote chance of them moving up even a single place. That all ended on Saturday when they recorded a fifth win of the season against Wrexham with the two of them swapping places.

Despite Morecambe then taking a hammering at home against Carlisle yesterday they have retained next to bottom place by 0.01 of a point per game over Wrexham who have had a massive fall from grace after winning the league just a year ago.

For Burnley it has been a disappointing season with a ninth place finish and that is lower than for some considerable time.

Many of that team will now go their separate ways. Eight of them are moving up to the development squad whilst three, local lads Callum Jakovlevs (pictured), Charlie Holt and Lewis Nuttall are all leaving the club.

Hopefully the lads moving to the development squad will start their push towards the first team whilst for the three leaving I can only wish them the very best and hope they get fixed up with new clubs before the start of next season.
