North West edge North East in Alliance Cup

Just four of the ties saw teams from the opposing leagues facing each other with Bury's home defeat against Lincoln the only one going the way of the North East Alliance.

In the other three there were wins for Carlisle, Rochdale and Oldham against York, Grimsby and Hartlepool respectively. Both Rochdale and Oldham netted six goals too; Rochdale beat Grimsby 6-0 and Oldham were 6-2 winners against Hartlepool.

Three of the ties went to penalties and that included our game at Blackpool after the home side had recovered with two George Lomax goals in the last twenty minutes after Ntumba Massanka and Jamie Frost looked to have done enough to see us through.

Blackpool coach Richie Kyle admitted that he was far from happy with his team's performance but delighted with the comeback and eventual result as they beat us 4-2 on penalties.

I was just making my way down to the Turf for the first team game when I heard the game had gone to penalties and I decided that would be that.

In last year's competition we were beaten 3-2 by Walsall with a goal in the 95th minute just as we thought penalties were on their way but our recent record in this competition is staggering.

In 2007/08 we drew 2-2 at Gawthorpe against Hartlepool in the northern semi-final but lost the penalty shoot out 5-4. A season later we drew 2-2 at Shrewsbury in round two. This time we lost 9-8 on penalties.

Twice in two seasons, but it continued. In the 2009/10 season we were held to a 0-0 home draw in the first round by Wigan. We lost that penalty shoot out 3-1 and we met Wigan again a year later, this time in the third round. Again it ended 0-0; this time the penalty shoot out was lost 3-2.

Four became five when Notts County won a third round shoot out 5-4 after a 2-2 draw making it five successive season that we'd gone out on penalties, and Saturday's makes it six times in seven seasons.

I think we'll be delighted to be back in league action this Saturday. We travel to Accrington and it is expected the game will be played at the Accrington ground.

Below are Saturday's cup results, next week's fixtures and Burnley's goalscorers.
