New leaders in Youth Alliance

It's not that many weeks since Shrewsbury were top of the league, but some disappointing results have seen them drop to sixth although they are only three points from the top and a two goal win against Preston would have seen them regain top spot.

It's certainly close with only four points separating the top seven and Preston, with games in hand, currently in form to have their say.

At the other end of the table, after a third successive league defeat, we remain next to bottom and that's where we will still be in a week's time with us now being four points behind next team Wrexham and the same number of points ahead of bottom club Morecambe.

It's four years since we were challenging at the top of the league, just missing out on the title to Preston in 2011/12 after an exhausting season that saw us reach the Lancs FA Youth Cup and the semi-finals of the FA Youth Cup.

Since then there has been a decline in our fortunes at this level. Recently chairman Mike Garlick spoke about ring fencing money for the development squad but I think the chairman would be better advised to look at the situation we are in with the younger groups.

This weekend we take on Walsall, usually a strong side who do well in this league. They are right up there again and in second place, just behind Bury and come to Gawthorpe having knocked Tranmere off the top last week with a 2-0 win against them.

Last week's results and the next fixtures are below along with Burnley's goalscorers and the current league table.
