Morecambe hit nine goals but Preston stay top

Alex MacDonald - scored three goals for the reserves this season
They entertained Preston last Thursday and beat them 4-0 with two goals from Jon Newby and one each from Wayne Curtis and Jamie Burns. It left them one point behind Preston and with three games in hand and that remains the same after both won this week.

Preston travelled to Tranmere on Tuesday and got back to winning ways with Alan Irvine fielding a very strong side. Two goals from Neil Mellor won them the points.

Last night Morecambe got back to within a point but it didn't look as though that would be the case as they fell 2-0 down to Wrexham at The Globe, the home of Buckley Town. Marc Williams and Mike Carvill got the goals as Wrexham outplayed them.

Morecambe did managed to pull one back before half time through Aaron Taylor and it all turned round in the second half as Taylor grabbed another, Paul Lloyd netted twice and Jon Newby scored again. From 2-0 down they were now 5-2 up, but in the end they had to battle to keep the lead as Wrexham pulled it back to 5-4 with goals from Wes Baynes and Josh Johnson.

Manchester City 2 Rochdale 1 is hardly a result you'd expect to see at first team level, but that's how they finished in this league on Tuesday night. City started the better and took the lead through Robbie Mak. But Rochdale fought back and deserved to be level when Jake Richardson equalised for them. It looked as though the bottom club would get a point but City won it with an Ian Daly goal two minutes from time.

Third met fourth as Blackpool took on Carlisle at Fleetwood and it was third place Carlisle who took the lead with a goal from Andy Cook. A very inexperienced Blackpool though came back with goals both Simon Wiles and John Hills scoring to take the points.

Finally two goals from Luke Holmes and one from Dale Stephens were enough to give Bury a win over Accrington and Radcliffe and the result means the two sides swap places just above bottom club Rochdale.
