Morecambe closing in at the top

When Morecambe play you can expect goals and it has been like that again this week with no fewer than eleven goals in two games. On Monday they travelled to Accrington to play the home/home side at the Fraser Eagle and recorded a comfortable 5-1 win.

That was a good start to the week but it wasn't plain sailing two days later when they played Manchester City on Wednesday. With Preston set to lose at home it meant a win would see them return to the top position they held earlier in the season. City were easy winners with Jack Redshaw scoring twice alongside further goals from Gary Nolan and Lee Hulme.

Preston's home defeat to Wrexham was a surprise one and it was won with a late penalty from Alex Darlington after Mike Carvill had been brought down by central defender Neal Trotman. Preston usually field a strong line up but on this occasion the only members of the first team squad on duty were Trotman and Michael Hart.

Blackpool scored four to beat Bury with four different scorers in Dominic Merella, Keith Southern, Simon Wiles and Joe Martin. The win takes them above the Clarets and with Carlisle also going above us after their 1-0 win it now takes us to sixth in the table yet a win would have seen us, with our games in hand, looking strong candidates to win the league.
