More success for youth team

Last updated : 14 December 2002 By Tony Scholes

The young players have been able to get some games under their belts recently and that certainly showed this morning in what was without doubt their best performance of the season.

Although still without central defender Gary Carter, who will now be out for some time with a shoulder injury, it was good to see Richard Chaplow back in the squad via the subs bench after missing recently through illness.

We won at Stockport last week in a good performance and so it is now two wins in succession and today we took the lead through Liam Eves who scored with a glancing header after Mark Rasmussen got down the right. Liam gave the goalkeeper no chance whatsoever with a goal similar to Brisser’s in the first team last week.

Rasmussen created the first but scored the second during the second half. He latched on to a poor header from the Wigan defender after Matty O’Neill had played a ball forward and was able to slot the ball into the empty net.

Wigan were one of the favourites for this league back in August but have suffered from inconsistency. They played well today though and the Clarets had to be at their best to beat them.

The two sides meet again next week and in this sort of form there is no reason why they cannot be beaten again.

The team was,

James Salisbury, Joel Pilkington, Paul Scott, Sean Blakey, Danny Pitham, Liam Eves, Rhys Carpenter, Steven Richardson, Damien Hindle, Mark Rasmussen, Matthew O’Neill. Subs: Richard Chaplow, Robert Grimes, Darrell Pugh, Tom Ince.
