Merit League Matters - Seals Club Clarets

Callum Selby - scored for Doncaster against Notts County
Firmly rooted to the bottom of the table following their opening day 4-0 defeat at Notts County, and without a game since then until last week, the young Seals more than made up for this poor start with three wins in the space of six days.

Carlisle (2-1), Burnley (2-0), and Doncaster (2-0) were all dispatched with striker Dean Buckley getting four of the goals. Buckley looked extremely lively at Gawthorpe on Saturday, and looks like one to keep an eye on.

Elsewhere there were one or two surprises, no more so than the 3-1 home defeat of leaders Notts County by Doncaster. Leon Best was on target again for Notts, our next opponents, but goals from Chris Dickman, Rob O’Brien and Callum Selby (on loan from Barnsley) gave the Rovers their first Merit League win.

Lincoln pulled off another shock, winning 3-2 at Oldham. Chris Bass and the prolific Carlos Roca scored for the Latics, but a missed penalty from Craig Fleming helped to end their unbeaten run. No news as yet of the Impish marksmen.

Stockport won 2-1 at hapless Carlisle with goals from Chris Williams and Michael Cartner, and Bradford City beat Grimsby 3-0 (Sam Denton, Anthony Doherty and Liam Flynn) thus becoming the only unbeaten side in the division.
