Merit League Matters - Notts Tops

Last updated : 07 March 2003 By Peter Heywood

Notts County head the table following their 2-0 win at Carlisle. Kris Nurse was on target again, with David McGoldrick getting the second, leaving the Cumbrians pointless. Our excellent away point at Stockport in the 1-1 draw leaves us handily placed in third, unbeaten in our last five Conference and Merit League fixtures.

Performance of the week though goes to our old adversaries Oldham Athletic who beat Grimsby 6-2 at home. The diminutive Carlos Roca claimed a hat-trick, with Craig Fleming getting two and Scott Vernon the other. Town actually led 2-1 at halftime but capitulated in the face of a second half onslaught. So shell-shocked were they at the end of the game that they thought they had only lost 5-2! Sadly for them, the Football League were obliged to confirm later that they had indeed conceded six.

In a bid to help unearth and develop more talent at Youth level the Mariners have set up a "donation hotline" where fans can phone in and donate money in multiples of £20, specifically for use in the youth set up. This follows on from a successful "Future of Youth Campaign" held last season. Already seven of the youth squad have gained first team experience this season with one of them, Danny Mansaram, scoring the equaliser against us in the FA Cup tie at Blundell Park.

A similar scheme may be helpful for us, but then with all that extra dosh that we’ve been raking in through the cup runs perhaps an amount (£250,000?) might be earmarked to sort out the drainage at Gawthorpe so that the youth team could actually play, and the first team train there regularly?
