Life is tough for the reserves

Keeper Michael Hale collects the ball from a Aheffield Wednesday corner
It was always going to be difficult and got even more so when Wednesday went in front with less than two minutes gone with the simplest of goals. A ball over the top of a square defence saw visiting striker Jon Shaw go clear and beat keeper Michael Hale before sliding the ball into an empty net.

To their credit though the youngsters, with Richard Chaplow prompting from the midfield, got themselves into the game and with any luck at all could have found themselves level. Damien Hindle forced a superb save out of goalkeeper Adam Ogden when his shot from 15 yards looked to be heading for the bottom corner, the keeper getting down superbly to tip it round the post for a corner.

Matt O’Neill was next to test the keeper with a shot from outside the box before the Alex Taylor had a header well tipped over. We were doing well at this stage but there was always this fear that Wednesday would get themselves another goal and that’s exactly what they did .

It came on 34 minutes when Richard Evans got down the left hand side before crossing low for debutant Guylain Ndumbu-Nsungu to hit home from close range. Shaw, scorer of the first, almost got his second right on half time but Hale made a good save and we went in just the two goals behind.

The discussion in the crowd during half time was that we had done better than expected given the inexperience in the side and much of the first team experience in Chaplow was replaced at half time with another youngster Ross Preston coming on.

The second half was fairly even stuff for the first ten minutes or so but our downfall came when we won a throw in down our right wing. Central defender Neal Trotman came up to take a long throw which Wednesday cleared quickly allowing Shaw a run on goal with Trotman unable to get back and precious little cover for him.

Damien Hindle clear from a free kick but his shot was saved
Shaw went through and shot at Hale who could not hold it and the ball squirmed out of his grasp. Ndumbu-Nsungu stormed in to hit the ball in but it was Shaw’s goal as the ball had already gone well over the line.

Burnley came close to scoring from a well worked free kick from Marc Pugh and Paul Scott that set up Hindle. Goalkeeper Ogden was quick to see the danger and made an excellent stop.

Almost immediately it was 4-0 as Wednesday attacked down the right. The ball was played in for Shaw who came close to grabbing his hat trick. Hale saved his shot but the ball rebounded to Evans who was totally unmarked and he made no mistake.

If that wasn’t enough there was further bad news when Pugh was stretchered off with fifteen minutes to go after a collision in midfield with Rhys Carpenter replacing him.

By that time the scoring was complete although Hale made a couple of good saves to keep the score down whilst Carpenter went close at the other end.

The result now leaves us without a point from four games and there is no doubt it is going to be a very difficult season for a side that must be the youngest and most inexperienced in the league, and by some distance.

Hopefully by the time they play again next month some of the injured first team squad players are fit again and some of them can play with the youngsters, they surely need a helping hand.
